Brent 100.81 and gold 4440.1 lead as Europe leaks into Pre-NY

Pre-NY · Energy Metals Lead · Wednesday · 09:00 New York / 14:00 London / 22:00 Tokyo

The one-breath open: Crude Oil WTI (CL) 95.93 up 3.12 percent, Brent (BZ) 100.81 up 2.95 percent, Gold (XAU/USD) 4440.1 up 1.05 percent, Silver (XAG/USD) 66.71 up 0.62 percent, CAC 40 (FRA40) 8158.41 down 1.92 percent, DAX 40 (GER40) 25570.8 down 1.68 percent, FTSE 100 (UK100) 10691.55 down 1.11 percent, Dow Jones (US30) 52786.07 down 1.18 percent, S&P 500 (US500) 7673.52 down 0.58 percent, Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) 29507.7 down 0.12 percent, VIX 16.51 up 5.03 percent, Bitcoin (BTC) 79521.84 up 1.38 percent: keep STANDARD on energy and gold holds that already earned the London sleeve, cut Europe to REDUCED-to-AVOID after the cash wash, keep REDUCED on US residual into the open, lift Bitcoin to REDUCED selective only, AVOID full tech gross rebuild and AVOID chasing Brent through 100 on fresh MAX size.

Tape Recap

What London actually did to the overnight book

Pre-NY inherits a harder split than Pre-London handed off. Energy extended and cleared the psychological Brent handle. Gold pushed through the overnight reclaim. Europe did not confirm either bid. It sold. That is not one risk line into the New York open. You size the sleeves that earned volume through the London cash window, you cut the sleeves that failed their own open, and you do not average a crude breakout into a CAC wash and call it global risk-on.

Europe is the cleanest posture change into this hand-off and it is bearish for residual size. FTSE 100 (UK100) last 10691.55, down 1.11 percent from 10811.7. DAX 40 (GER40) last 25570.8, down 1.68 percent from 26007.63. CAC 40 (FRA40) last 8158.41, down 1.92 percent from 8317.98. Pre-London treated Europe as a REDUCED sympathy sleeve that still had to earn its own bid. London cash refused the bid and then accelerated the leak. The consequence is immediate: Europe moves to REDUCED-to-AVOID on fresh adds into New York. Do not rebuild continental residual off gold strength. The continent already voted.

US marks into this hand-off are still the soft cash close and nothing in the London sleeve repaired them. Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) last 29507.7, down 0.12 percent from 29544.15. S&P 500 (US500) 7673.52, down 0.58 percent from 7718.6. Dow Jones (US30) 52786.07, down 1.18 percent from 53414.25. Russell 2000 (US2000) 2960.2, down 0.52 percent from 2975.65. The Dow leak is still the cleanest US message. Europe’s wash does not give permission to invent a US bounce into the open. US index residual stays REDUCED. Force every name and every sleeve to earn the first New York hour on its own print.

Asia closed the overnight as a controlled soft region, not a recovery lead. Nikkei 225 (JP225) last 65142.78, down 0.19 percent from 65269.33. The failed reclaim from earlier in the cycle never came back. Hang Seng (HK50) last 25274.96, down 0.17 percent from 25317.18. Japan stays REDUCED-to-AVOID on fresh adds. Hang Seng stays REDUCED. The desk read will not let an energy spike rewrite Asia equities into STANDARD. Do not rebuild Asia as one line into New York.

Metals and energy are now the only clean STANDARD sleeve on the board, and London confirmed both rather than fading them. Gold (XAU/USD) last 4440.1 from 4393.9, up 1.05 percent. The overnight reclaim Pre-London flagged has been extended, not faded. That keeps gold engagement at STANDARD on holds above the reclaimed base, not MAX chase after a full percent-plus lift into the US open. Silver (XAG/USD) 66.71 from 66.3, up 0.62 percent, confirms the metals pair at smaller size after giving back the sharper overnight spike. Crude Oil WTI (CL) last 95.93 from 93.03, up 3.12 percent. Brent (BZ) 100.81 from 97.92, up 2.95 percent. Energy did not cool. It extended, and Brent cleared 100. That is still STANDARD on holds that already paid through cash and London. It is not a MAX fresh chase through a multi-percent day that has already paid the early book. Bitcoin (BTC) last 79521.84 from 78438.58, up 1.38 percent. Crypto finally printed a confirming bid rather than a soft withhold. Lift it to REDUCED selective only. It is not a lead sleeve and it does not authorise full gross crypto rebuild into the open.

The dollar complex still underwrites the metals bid without giving Europe a free pass. US Dollar Index (DXY) last 98.67 from 98.84, down 0.17 percent. EUR/USD 1.1651 from 1.1628, up 0.2 percent. GBP/USD 1.3554 from 1.3547, up 0.05 percent. USD/JPY last 153.38 from 153.85, down 0.31 percent, yen still firm against the Friday base. Soft dollar supports gold. It did not save European equities. Firmer yen keeps full-size Japan chase expensive after the failed reclaim. VIX last 16.51 against 15.72, up 5.03 percent, with the volatility sleeve printing 16.48 and a one-day lift of 0.76 off a five-day average of 15.53. Fear and greed 39.5, labelled neutral, down from yesterday’s 40.8. Regime read stays neutral. Vol has left the floor without breaking into a panic regime. You are paid for tighter risk into the New York open, not for hero size on a book London already sorted sleeve by sleeve.

Single-name US tech is still the cash referee’s split and London did not average it. Tesla (TSLA) 368.16, up 3.98 percent from 354.08. Broadcom (AVGO) 368.56, up 2.98 percent from 357.9. Against that: Nvidia (NVDA) 225.73, down 2.01 percent from 230.36. Apple (AAPL) 316.22, down 1.17 percent from 319.97. Microsoft (MSFT) 493.95, down 1.15 percent from 499.7. Amazon (AMZN) 256.97, down 0.6 percent from 258.51. Meta (META) 613.48, down 0.53 percent from 616.77. Alphabet (GOOGL) 338.36, down 0.03 percent from 338.46. EV and one chip name still own the repair. The bulk of the mega-cap stack still leaks. Do not run a single tech risk line into New York. Cash sorted the stack name by name and the desk read still refuses to re-average it. Earnings traffic today runs through Inditex ADR, Chewy, Academy Sports, Signet Jewelers, American Eagle Outfitters, Cooper, AeroVironment and the rest of the mid-cap list. That is single-name event risk inside a soft index complex, not permission to rebuild tech gross.

What We Called vs What Happened

Scoring the Pre-London desk

The Pre-London one-breath open said: “lift gold to STANDARD on the overnight reclaim, keep STANDARD on energy holds that still sit above the prior cash base, keep REDUCED on US index residual after the Dow leak, cut Nikkei to REDUCED-to-AVOID after the Asia reclaim failed, AVOID full gross rebuild on single-name tech into the London open.” Gold extended from the then mark of 4431.5 to 4440.1, up 1.05 percent on the day grid. STANDARD on the reclaim was the right band and London confirmed it rather than fading it. Confirmed. Energy did more than hold: CL moved from 93.94 to 95.93, up 3.12 percent, and Brent from 99.02 to 100.81, up 2.95 percent. STANDARD on holds above the prior cash base was correct. The extension through 100 on Brent is a gift to the existing hold book, not a miss. Confirmed, with the only refinement that fresh MAX chase through the handle is the wrong side of a multi-percent day.

On US residual the Pre-London desk kept REDUCED after the Dow leak at US30 52786.07 down 1.18 percent, US500 7673.52 down 0.58 percent, NAS100 29507.7 down 0.12 percent. Those marks are unchanged into Pre-NY. London never repaired them. Confirmed. On Nikkei the desk cut to REDUCED-to-AVOID after the reclaim failed. JP225 now 65142.78, down 0.19 percent, still soft and still unconfirmed. Confirmed. On single-name tech, AVOID full gross rebuild held straight through London: TSLA and AVGO still own the repair prints, NVDA AAPL MSFT still leak. Confirmed.

On Europe the Pre-London desk wrote that “Europe is a REDUCED sympathy sleeve into its own cash open” and that UK100, GER40 and FRA40 “still have not earned a STANDARD add.” London cash then printed UK100 down 1.11 percent, GER40 down 1.68 percent, FRA40 down 1.92 percent. REDUCED was the right side of the open. The wash went further than a flat sympathy sleeve implied, so the honest refinement is to tighten Europe to REDUCED-to-AVOID on fresh adds into New York. Call part-right on posture, confirmed on direction, upgraded in severity. On Bitcoin the prior withhold at 78994.71 has been overtaken by a 1.38 percent lift to 79521.84. Withhold was right into London. The New York hand-off now allows REDUCED selective, not a full rebuild. Net score: gold STANDARD held and extended, energy STANDARD held and extended through 100 on Brent, US residual REDUCED held, Nikkei REDUCED-to-AVOID held, tech AVOID held, Europe REDUCED was directionally right and now tightens. The main refinement into the New York open is simple: energy and metals keep the STANDARD sleeve, Europe joins Japan in the cut bucket, US residual stays capped by the Dow leak, and Bitcoin earns only a selective seat.

Session Setup Ahead

New York open with energy and metals still the only clean lead

Pre-NY on Wednesday is a discovery session into US cash with Europe already scored as a wash and Asia already scored as a failed reclaim. The desk read stays neutral regime, fear and greed 39.5 neutral, VIX 16.51. That single stack is the sizing constraint that matters more than any single level on the board into the open. You do not arrive into New York with a full directional book rebuilt off a Brent handle break. You arrive with STANDARD on what already earned and held a bid through London, REDUCED on what still needs US volume confirmation, and AVOID on anything that only worked as a single-name bounce inside a soft index complex.

NAS100 at 29507.7, down 0.12 percent, still does not lead the US complex. US500 at 7673.52, down 0.58 percent, and US30 at 52786.07, down 1.18 percent, keep broad US bullishness capped into the cash open. US2000 at 2960.2, down 0.52 percent, never recovered the mild small-cap bid. Adding full size into the open on a hope that the Dow leak was noise is how desks turn a clean European adjudication into a messy US session. Mirror the split. Do not average a flat NAS100 into Dow leakage and call it one US beta line. UK100 at 10691.55, GER40 at 25570.8 and FRA40 at 8158.41 have already printed their verdict. Europe is no longer a sympathy watch. It is a cut.

Nikkei at 65142.78 down 0.19 percent remains a failed reclaim. Hang Seng at 25274.96 down 0.17 percent stays REDUCED on China-linked residual. Gold at 4440.1 and silver at 66.71 still share the STANDARD sleeve with energy. CL at 95.93 and BZ at 100.81 still earn holds that already paid through cash and London. The New York open is where US volume either confirms that metals and energy lead or mean-reverts the multi-percent extension. Size STANDARD on the confirmed sleeves. Keep US REDUCED until the first hour earns more. Stay REDUCED-to-AVOID on Europe and Japan. Stay AVOID on full tech gross rebuild. Treat the mid-cap earnings list as event risk inside a soft tape, not as a sector green light.

Key Levels

Where New York either confirms or fades the London split

Instrument Level Pre-NY setup
Crude Oil WTI (CL) 95.93 STANDARD holds only. A break back under the London extension forces REDUCED on fresh adds and stops the chase story cold.
Brent (BZ) 100.81 Handle cleared. Losing 100 on a US open fade cuts engagement to REDUCED and punishes MAX late entries.
Gold (XAU/USD) 4440.1 STANDARD above the reclaimed base. A slip back toward the 4393.9 prior close returns the band to REDUCED.
Dow Jones (US30) 52786.07 REDUCED residual. Failure to reclaim toward 53414.25 keeps broad US bullishness capped through the first hour.
CAC 40 (FRA40) 8158.41 REDUCED-to-AVOID. Any bounce that fails to retake 8317.98 is a sell-the-rip against the London wash.
Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) 29507.7 Still not the leader. A push through 29544.15 without Dow repair is a trap for single-beta US size.
Economic Calendar

Asia already printed. New York inherits the verdict.

The heavy Asia cluster is already through the tape. Japanese tankan, Korean unemployment, Chinese inflation and PPI, Indonesian confidence and sales, and the Japanese machine tool orders print have all cleared the overnight window. French industrial production has also cleared the London morning. Nothing in the remaining calendar forces a fresh directional book into the New York open on its own. Holidays today and tomorrow are empty. The session risk is therefore price discovery off the London split, the US residual, and the mid-cap earnings list, not a scheduled macro headline the desk has not already absorbed. Size the open off the sleeves that already voted. Do not invent a macro alibi for chasing Brent or averaging Europe.

Earnings traffic is the real single-name calendar into this cash open. Inditex ADR, Sunbelt Rentals Holdings, Cooper, Sailpoint, Chewy, Core Main, AeroVironment, Korn Ferry, Signet Jewelers, National Beverage, American Eagle Outfitters, Academy Sports, Cognyte Software, Oddity Tech and Lesaka Tech all sit on the Wednesday list. That is event risk concentrated in retail, services and selected tech. It is not a green light to rebuild mega-cap tech gross. Keep single-name size REDUCED inside the soft index complex and force each print to earn its own seat.

Ethical Lens

Values-conscious capital does not chase a three percent energy day blind

The values-conscious book has a cleaner map today than the momentum book. Energy’s 3.12 percent WTI extension and Brent’s break through 100.81 are real P&L, but they also concentrate transition risk and geopolitical supply risk in one sleeve. STANDARD on holds that already earned the move is consistent with mandate discipline. MAX fresh chase through the handle is not. Gold at 4440.1 up 1.05 percent remains the cleaner ballast for accounts that need a non-equity hedge without levering a soft US complex. Europe’s 1.9 percent CAC wash is a reminder that continental industrial exposure still has to clear governance and energy-input screens before it earns STANDARD size again.

Single-name tech still fails the uniform screen. NVDA down 2.01 percent, AAPL down 1.17 percent and MSFT down 1.15 percent sit against TSLA up 3.98 percent and AVGO up 2.98 percent. A values book does not average that stack into one thematic line. It picks the names that clear governance, supply-chain and energy-intensity tests and it leaves the rest. Bitcoin’s 1.38 percent lift to 79521.84 earns only REDUCED selective until volatility and custody standards both clear the desk read. The ethical posture into Pre-NY is identical to the risk posture: STANDARD on earned metals and energy holds, REDUCED on US residual, REDUCED-to-AVOID on Europe and Japan, AVOID on undifferentiated tech gross.

Scenarios & Bias

Four paths into the cash open

Scenario Probability What it looks like
Bull 20% US open reclaims toward the prior closes, Dow repairs the 1.18 percent leak, energy holds above 95.93 and 100.81, gold holds 4440.1. Only then does US residual lift toward STANDARD.
Sideways 40% New York chops around the soft cash marks. Energy and gold keep STANDARD holds. Europe stays offered. Index beta stays REDUCED and range-bound through the first two hours.
Correction 30% VIX pushes further above 16.51, US500 and US30 extend the leak, Brent loses 100, gold slips toward 4393.9. Energy and metals cut to REDUCED. Europe stays AVOID.
Black swan 10% Discontinuous gap in energy or vol forces a full risk cut. STANDARD sleeves go to AVOID until the print stabilises. No hero bid into the first dislocation.

Risk for the Pre-NY session sits around 54%: VIX already up 5.03 percent to 16.51, Europe already washed 1.11 to 1.92 percent, Brent extended 2.95 percent through 100, and US residual still soft on the Dow leak. That stack pays for tighter gross into the open. Use STANDARD only on energy and gold holds that already earned London volume. Use REDUCED on US index residual and on selective Bitcoin. Use REDUCED-to-AVOID on Europe and Japan. Use AVOID on full tech gross rebuild and on fresh MAX energy chase through the handle. If the first hour repairs Dow toward 53414.25 with NAS100 through 29544.15, risk can step down. Until that print arrives, keep the book smaller than conviction.

By Experience Level

Same tape, three seat sizes

Beginner: Do not invent a US bounce off a soft European close. If you are engaged at all, sit STANDARD only on gold above 4440.1 or on energy holds already in the book above 95.93 and 100.81. Keep index work REDUCED or flat until Dow and S&P both reclaim. Skip single-name tech into the open. One clean sleeve beats three mixed ones.

Intermediate: Run the split explicitly. STANDARD on CL, BZ and gold holds. REDUCED on NAS100 and US500 residual with the Dow leak as the hard cap. REDUCED-to-AVOID on UK100, GER40, FRA40 and JP225. REDUCED selective only on BTC above 79521.84. AVOID averaging NVDA, AAPL and MSFT into TSLA and AVGO strength. Trail energy winners rather than adding MAX through the Brent handle.

Advanced: Express the London wash as a relative sleeve, not as a headline. Keep metals and energy as the financed STANDARD core. Fade failed Europe reclaims toward 8317.98 on FRA40 and 26007.63 on GER40 only at REDUCED size with tight invalidation. Treat any NAS100 push through 29544.15 without Dow repair as a reduction signal, not a breakout. Use the mid-cap earnings list as tactical event flow inside a REDUCED US book, never as permission to rebuild mega-cap gross. If VIX holds above 16.51 while Brent loses 100, cut the STANDARD core to REDUCED in one step and wait for the next earned base.

Bias

Bias in one sentence: Neutral regime with a STANDARD bullish lean only on earned energy and gold holds, a REDUCED stance on US residual, and a REDUCED-to-AVOID stance on Europe and Japan into the New York open.

For the sleeve detail behind today’s lead markets, read the Crude Oil daily framework alongside the Gold daily framework, and keep the broader equity map anchored on the indices desk hub before you add US residual size.
