Stocks that pass our ethical screen

If you search for halal stocks, you want a plain answer to one question: which companies are safe to hold if you avoid interest, gambling, alcohol and similar businesses? Plenty of other people ask the same thing for their own reasons, such as health, conscience or personal values. The question is the same, so the list is the same.

How our screen works

This page explains how our screen works, shows you the companies that pass it today, and teaches you how to read the workings behind each result. We check each company in two steps. Both must pass.

Step 1

What the company does

We look at the business itself. Companies whose main activity is conventional banking, lending, insurance, gambling, alcohol, tobacco, adult entertainment or similar are excluded straight away. Their page says which excluded activity applies, in plain words.

Step 2

The balance sheet

If the business is acceptable, we test four ratios against the limits used by widely followed Islamic index methodologies. A company passes only when every check was actually run and came back inside its limit.

Check 1

Debt against total assets

below 33.33%

How much of the company is funded by borrowing.

Check 2

Interest-bearing holdings against total assets

below 33.33%

Catches companies that mostly hold cash and bonds that earn interest.

Check 3

Receivables plus cash against total assets

below 50%

Checks that the company is mainly made of real operating assets.

Check 4

Interest income against total revenue

below 5%

How much of the company's income comes from interest.

If we cannot get the accounts, we do not guess. The company is shown as "Under review" or "Insufficient data" until the numbers are available. We would rather leave a name off the list than put it on the list by mistake. Each result also has a short Ethical Read in plain English, explaining why the company passes or falls short, with a dated history if the result has changed.

The list

These are the largest US-listed companies that carry the Titan Ethical seal today, which means they cleared every check above. Each row shows the four ratios against their limits and the date of the data behind the result. Sort by any column. The bar under each ratio shows how much of the limit is used, so you can see which companies pass comfortably and which pass narrowly.

Ranked by market value among 1,070 US-listed companies that pass. 1,794 companies pass across every market we cover; the full screener lists them all. Rows dated more than a week before today are marked.

Held back from this ranking while we check a stored figure: Quhuo Ltd ADR (QH), stored market value implies more shares than any listed company.

Three other labels appear in the full screener, and we show them because hiding them would give a false picture:

  • Potentially compliant: the business is acceptable and the checks we could run passed, but at least one figure is missing.
  • Under review: we could not retrieve enough filings to decide.
  • Does not meet our screen: with the reason a click away. Most failures are for debt above the limit, or an excluded business activity such as conventional financial services.

Fewer companies pass than most people expect. Debt alone removes a large share of the market. That is a feature of the screen, not a flaw in the list.

How to read a company page

Open any company from the list and you will find the same layout.

The seal and verdict at the top

Green means every check passed. The other states are shown in the same place so you can tell them apart at a glance.

The five-check table

One row for the business check and one for each ratio, with the company's figure next to the limit. Look at the gap between the two. A debt ratio of 8% against a 33.33% limit is a comfortable pass. A ratio of 31% passes, but a small change in the next set of accounts could move it.

The Ethical Read

Two or three plain sentences saying what drives the result.

The dated trail

Results are rechecked as new accounts arrive. If a company has moved in or out of the passing group, the earlier reads stay visible below.

Two practical habits help. First, check the date. A result is a statement about the latest accounts we hold, so it is only as current as its date. Second, look at the margin, not just the tick.

Frequently asked questions

What does halal stocks actually mean?

A halal stock is the share of a company whose business and finances meet Islamic investment guidelines: no prohibited activities, and limits on debt, interest-bearing assets and interest income. Different scholars and index providers draw some lines slightly differently, which is why we publish our exact checks and limits rather than a bare label.

Is this a religious ruling?

No. This is a research tool that applies published financial ratios and activity exclusions to company accounts. It is not a fatwa and it is not personal advice. If your faith practice requires a ruling, take the workings to a qualified scholar or your own advisor.

Which stocks are halal to buy right now?

The ones on our list carry the Titan Ethical seal today. We do not rank them as buys. Passing the screen tells you a company is acceptable under our checks. It tells you nothing about price or timing, and any company's result can change when new accounts are filed.

Are Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia halal?

Each has its own page showing the exact figures and the date of the result. Check the date and the margins there rather than relying on a headline answer, because results can change.

Their pages: Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia. Verdict pages: Is Apple halal?, Is Microsoft halal?, Is Nvidia halal?

What about purification?

Many scholars advise donating the small share of a company's income that comes from interest or other excluded sources. Our screen shows the interest income ratio so you can see roughly how much applies. We do not calculate a personal purification amount for you.
