Pre-Asia Brief 2 Nov 2026: US CPI lands Tuesday 10 November. Is the tape priced for a surprise?

US CPI lands Tuesday 10 November. Is the tape priced for a surprise?

Pre-Asia · CPI pricing · Monday · 16:00 New York / 21:00 London / 06:00 Tokyo

The one-breath open: Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) sits 27989.82 after a 1.39pc US cut, VIX holds 21.15, and US CPI prints on 10 November with no consensus figure in the block; the desk question is whether two sessions of growth damage have already paid for a soft or firm surprise, or whether Asia must force a third leg before that release can be absorbed cleanly.

Tape Since Last Brief

US growth stayed bruised while Europe refused the cascade

Cash left Asia a factor split, not a uniform wash. NAS100 last 27989.82 against 28384.85, down 1.39pc. S&P 500 (US500) 7541.4, down 0.51pc. Russell 2000 (US2000) 2805.88, down 0.21pc. The damage concentrated in growth beta: Microsoft (MSFT) 507.12 minus 2.83pc, Apple (AAPL) 338.32 minus 1.83pc, Meta (META) 606.73 minus 1.34pc, Nvidia (NVDA) 202.06 minus 1.26pc, Broadcom (AVGO) 322.23 minus 1.18pc. Amazon (AMZN) 245.63 rose 2.2pc and Tesla (TSLA) 403.82 rose 1.0pc, so the tape punished crowded AI-proxy weight rather than every megacap equally. Dow Jones (US30) finished 51983.98, up 0.41pc, proof that the industrial sleeve took a rotation bid while growth kept offering.

Europe closed with a real bid. FTSE 100 (UK100) 10761.33, up 0.29pc. DAX 40 (GER40) 25981.09, up 0.63pc. CAC 40 (FRA40) 8047.69, up 0.98pc. That matters for Tokyo: the European book did not cascade with US growth, so the open inherits a choice rather than a forced gap lower. Asia’s own last marks split hard. Nikkei 225 (JP225) 63290.11, down 2.12pc from 64659.47. Hang Seng (HK50) 23294.42, up 1.46pc. Japan is on holiday the next local session, so Monday’s New York close and this Asia pass carry more of the week’s discovery into the mid-November CPI window.

Vol re-accelerated without a full panic print. VIX last 21.15 against 19.42, an 8.91pc lift and a 1.73 point one-day rise, sitting above the five-day average of 19.68. Sentiment gauge 22.7 with a neutral label, down 3.5 from 26.2. Used as a positioning proxy, that stack says residual growth holds were forced lighter again, yet 22.7 is short of a capitulation wash. Historically, when VIX jumps from the high teens through 21 after a second consecutive growth session and Europe refuses the cascade, the next Asia pass either locks a mean-revert attempt or probes a fresh low once the US strip reopens soft.

Cross-asset map is decisive on energy and metals. Gold (XAU/USD) 3956.6, up 1.48pc. Silver (XAG/USD) 50.71, up 3.29pc. Haven metals took the bid. Crude Oil WTI (CL) 96.26, down 7.55pc from 104.12. Brent (BZ) 104.23, down 11.4pc from 117.64. Energy collapsed and no longer cushions equity stress. Bitcoin (BTC) 76764.4, down 1.9pc, now confirms rather than denies the equity cut. US Dollar Index (DXY) 101.79, softer 0.09pc. EUR/USD 1.1192 up 0.08pc, GBP/USD 1.3406 up 0.2pc, USD/JPY 157.85 almost flat. Soft dollar, hard growth beta, firm metals, smashed crude: trade the factor bruise into Asia, not a dollar shock.

What We Called vs What Happened

Score the Post-Close anchors

Two anchors from the prior brief. First: “two sessions of growth damage already mark a heavy reaction path.” Confirmed on the board: NAS100 held the 27989.82 close, MSFT, AAPL and the semi peers stayed offered, and VIX accepted 21.15 above the 19.68 five-day average, so the path remains heavy into this handoff. Second: “the Asia handoff must decide if that is enough or if a third leg is still required.” Unresolved and live: Tokyo has not yet printed a decisive acceptance or rejection of the US growth mark, so the third-leg question is exactly what this open must answer before the CPI week builds.

Session Setup

Pre-Asia inherits a risk-off book with a thin Tokyo follow-through

Regime on the desk read stays risk-off, same as yesterday. That sets sizing posture, not a collapse call. Liquidity into the first Asia hour is honest, then Japan’s holiday thins the next local book, which shifts more discovery onto New York and into the 10 November CPI slot. JP225 and HK50 either accept the US growth mark in the opening window or probe a bounce that dies if NAS100 strips print under 27989.82.

Positioning inference uses the sentiment score of 22.7 (neutral label) and VIX at 21.15 as proxies. That combination says crowded growth expressions took a second cut, but 22.7 is not a washout extreme. In prior episodes where vol lifted through 21 after two tech-led sessions and Europe closed firmer rather than cascading, Asia either ground a partial repair or sold the first bounce once the US strip reopened soft. Invalidation for further downside: a firm hold and grind back through the 28384.85 zone on rising breadth. Invalidation for any bounce attempt: VIX holding above 21.15 into the Tokyo open and NAS100 making a fresh session low on the strip.

AAPL reported today alongside Palantir Tech, Vertex, Marriott International and a long list of others. Name-specific noise sat under the index tape and can still fake a bounce that fails on the strip. FX offers little translation cushion: USD/JPY at 157.85 is almost flat, so JP225 is not being propped by a softer yen. DXY at 101.79 is not chasing higher, which keeps this as an equity beta selloff rather than a dollar event.

US CPI 10 November

Is the tape priced for a surprise?

The publish question is whether the tape is already priced for a surprise when US CPI lands on 10 November. The data block carries no consensus estimate, no prior CPI print, and no implied-move number, so the analysis will not invent one. What the tape does show is a two-session growth mark already in place: NAS100 down from the prior reference of 28384.85 to 27989.82, US500 at 7541.4 minus 0.51pc, NVDA at 202.06, AVGO at 322.23, MSFT at 507.12 minus 2.83pc, and VIX accepted at 21.15 above the 19.68 five-day average. Sentiment at 22.7, down 3.5 from 26.2, adds a positioning proxy that says residual bullish growth holds are lighter than they were at the prior reference close.

What that means for positioning into the release: the easy growth expression has already been stopped or trimmed, inferred from the size of the peer drawdown, from VIX holding 21.15, and from the 22.7 sentiment score used as a proxy rather than a primary signal. As a proxy stack, that combination has historically meant a mid-cycle inflation print lands on a book that has started to de-risk. A soft outcome can still squeeze what is left in growth beta; a firm outcome lands on a book that has already cut and can gap the beta again. The work before 10 November is mechanical: map NAS100 27989.82, NVDA 202.06 and AVGO 322.23 as the tell-tales through the Asia and New York passes this week, and treat a failure to defend 27989.82 as confirmation that the cut is not done ahead of the print.

What proves the “already marked” thesis wrong: if NAS100 and the semi peers stabilise and grind higher into the CPI window without a vol crush, the market is no longer pricing stress and a firm print would re-open downside that looked closed. What proves it right: if peers keep making lower highs into the result and VIX stays bid above the 19.68 five-day average, then even a fair outcome can lift the book because the mark has been taken. Historically, readings this heavy across two growth sessions ahead of a mid-month inflation release have either exhausted sellers early or required a third leg once the print confirmed demand heat; the tell is whether 27989.82 holds as a floor or becomes another ceiling. Until then, Pre-Asia trades the bruise on the board, not a number we cannot price from this block.

Key Levels

Where Asia forces a decision

Instrument Level Pre-Asia setup
Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) 27989.82 Lose it on the strip and growth books cut again through the Tokyo window; defend it and the bounce attempt earns one clean try before the holiday thin.
S&P 500 (US500) 7541.4 A break under this mark drags the broad tape with the growth bruise; hold and beta desks can probe a mean-revert on the open.
VIX 21.15 Hold above here and hedges stay paid through Tokyo; a slip back under 19.42 kills urgency on fresh put buying.
Gold (XAU/USD) 3956.6 The 1.48pc lift confirms the haven bid is live; lose this mark and de-leveraging retakes the metal sleeve.
Crude Oil WTI (CL) 96.26 The 7.55pc drop removes energy as an offset; break lower and cyclical books add pressure rather than cushion.
Nvidia (NVDA) 202.06 The tell-tale for the whole growth book into the CPI window; a fresh low here keeps the bearish skew paid, a hold lets a squeeze form.
Economic Calendar

Asia diary leads, Japan thins next local session

Verified releases on the book are Asia-weighted: Australia TD-MI Inflation Gauge MoM OCT at 0.5pc against 0.3pc prior, Building Permits MoM Prel SEP at 5.1pc against a 2.1pc read, Indonesia and Korea manufacturing PMIs, Japan S&P Global Manufacturing PMI Final OCT at 53.3, China RatingDog Manufacturing PMI OCT at 52.0 against 51.6, plus Indonesia trade and inflation figures. No US macro catalyst sits on the immediate Pre-Asia window; the next named US inflation event on the desk calendar is CPI on 10 November, and the block carries no consensus for it. Japan holidays the next local session, which thins Tokyo participation and shifts more discovery onto New York and into that CPI slot. Earnings flow was heavy today with AAPL, Palantir Tech, Vertex, Marriott International and others, so single-name noise can still distort the strip without changing the regime. Write the handoff as price-led. Weight falls on NAS100 at 27989.82, VIX at 21.15, and the Asia open marks.

Ethical Lens

Values read on this handoff

The live ethical weight sits on AAPL’s report day and on the energy reverse into a thinner Asia book. A values-aware desk treats the 1.83pc AAPL slip and the broader semi cut as a screen refresh on supply-chain and labour standards, not a mechanical dip-buy in names it would not carry through a full cycle. WTI’s drop to 96.26 and Brent’s collapse to 104.23 cut the cyclical carbon bid and favour books already tilted toward lower-intensity exporters on the European close rather than chased energy beta on the bounce.

Scenarios & Bias

Four paths from the Asia open

Scenario Likelihood What it looks like
Bullish repair Alternate JP225 and HK50 open firm, NAS100 strip defends 27989.82, VIX slips toward 19.42, and growth peers stop making lower highs into the US day.
Sideways grind Base case Asia accepts the US mark without cascading, breadth stays mixed, VIX holds the low 21s, and the tape waits on New York for the next directional tell ahead of CPI week.
Correction leg Alternate NAS100 loses 27989.82 on the strip, NVDA prints a fresh low under 202.06, VIX pushes further above 21.15, and Europe’s firm close fails to cushion the next US pass.
Black swan Tail A sudden cross-asset break: CL and Brent gap again, gold loses 3956.6 on forced de-leveraging, BTC accelerates under 76764.4, and every region sells as one book.

Risk for the Pre-Asia sits at ELEVATED: two sessions of growth damage, VIX at 21.15 above the 19.68 five-day average, crude smashed, Japan thinning next local session, and a mid-November CPI window with no consensus in the block. Use REDUCED size on fresh growth expressions until 27989.82 is defended on rising breadth; STANDARD only on clearly defined mean-revert attempts with tight invalidation; AVOID adding crowded beta into the holiday thin.

By Experience Level

How to sit this open

Beginner: Watch NAS100 27989.82 and VIX 21.15 only; if both break the wrong way in the first Asia hour, stand aside rather than chase a bounce you cannot define.

Intermediate: Map NVDA 202.06 and AVGO 322.23 as confirmation tells against the index strip; fade only a clean defence of 27989.82 with VIX slipping, and cut if the strip reprints the low.

Advanced: Trade the factor split: Europe’s firm close versus US growth bruise leaves room for relative expressions, but keep gross light while Japan is holiday-thin and the CPI window is unpriced in the block.

Bias

Bias in one sentence: Bearish on crowded growth beta into Asia until NAS100 defends 27989.82 and VIX yields the 21 handle, with the 10 November CPI window treated as unpriced noise until the strip stabilises.
