Pre-NY Brief 3 Nov 2026: US CPI lands Tuesday 10 November. Is the tape priced for a surprise?

US CPI lands Tuesday 10 November. Is the tape priced for a surprise?

Pre-NY · CPI week pricing · Tuesday · 08:00 New York / 13:00 London / 22:00 Tokyo

The one-breath open: Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) holds 27989.82 after the 1.39pc US cut, VIX accepts 21.67 above the 20.17 five-day average, and US CPI lands Tuesday 10 November with no consensus in the block; the desk question is whether two growth sessions plus Europe’s fade already price a soft or firm CPI surprise, or whether New York must force another leg before that print clears.

Tape Since Last Brief

Europe faded the US growth mark; metals kept offering

Pre-NY inherits the bruise, not a repair. NAS100 last 27989.82 against 28384.85, down 1.39pc. S&P 500 (US500) 7541.4, down 0.51pc. Russell 2000 (US2000) 2805.88, down 0.21pc. Growth beta stayed offered: Microsoft (MSFT) 507.12 minus 2.83pc, Apple (AAPL) 338.32 minus 1.83pc, Meta (META) 606.73 minus 1.34pc, Nvidia (NVDA) 202.06 minus 1.26pc, Broadcom (AVGO) 322.23 minus 1.18pc. Amazon (AMZN) 245.63 rose 2.2pc and Tesla (TSLA) 403.82 rose 1.0pc, so the cut stayed factor-led. Dow Jones (US30) finished 51983.98, up 0.41pc, rotation into the industrial sleeve while AI-proxy weight kept supplying.

Continental marks reversed the prior bid. FTSE 100 (UK100) 10687.99, down 0.68pc from 10761.3. DAX 40 (GER40) 25836.65, down 0.56pc. CAC 40 (FRA40) 8035.46, down 0.15pc. That fade answers the London choice: Europe did not defend the US mark. Asia split without panic. Nikkei 225 (JP225) 63081.86, down 0.33pc. Hang Seng (HK50) 23525.97, up 0.57pc. Japan holidays today, so discovery sits on the New York strip into mid-week.

Vol firmed again. VIX last 21.67 against 21.15, a 2.46pc lift, above the five-day average of 20.17. Sentiment gauge 18.6 with a neutral label, down 4.1 from 22.7. Used as a positioning proxy, that stack says residual growth holds were forced lighter again, yet 18.6 is short of a capitulation wash. Historically, when VIX holds above 21 after a second growth session and Europe joins the fade, the next New York pass either locks a mean-revert try or probes a fresh low once the strip reopens soft.

Cross-asset map stayed hostile on metals. Gold (XAU/USD) 3923.7, down 1.16pc. Silver (XAG/USD) 49.26, down 2.88pc. Haven bid remains sold. Crude Oil WTI (CL) 97.21, up 0.78pc. Brent (BZ) 105.04, up 0.26pc. Energy offers a thin cyclical cushion. Bitcoin (BTC) 77271.86, up 0.78pc, no longer confirms the equity bruise as hard. US Dollar Index (DXY) 101.86, up 0.11pc. EUR/USD 1.1179 up 0.2pc, GBP/USD 1.3405 up 0.15pc, USD/JPY 158.24 up 0.36pc. Mild dollar firmness, hard growth beta, sold metals: trade the factor bruise into New York, not a pure dollar shock.

What We Called vs What Happened

Score the Pre-London anchors

Two anchors from the prior brief. First: “Invalidation for further downside: a firm reclaim and grind back through the 28384.85 zone on rising breadth.” Confirmed as not met: 28384.85 was not reclaimed, breadth stayed growth-led weaker, and the bearish skew on beta remains paid. Second: “UK100, GER40 and FRA40 either extend their cash bid or fade once NAS100 futures test 27989.82 again.” Confirmed on the fade path: UK100 closed 10687.99 minus 0.68pc, GER40 25836.65 minus 0.56pc, FRA40 8035.46 minus 0.15pc, so continental strength did not hold once the US mark was retested.

Session Setup

Pre-NY takes a risk-off book with Japan offline

Regime on the desk read stays risk-off, same as yesterday. That sets sizing posture, not a collapse call. Japan’s holiday thins Asian follow-through, so the New York strip carries more of the week’s discovery into the CPI window. NAS100 at 27989.82 either defends and earns a bounce try, or loses the mark and forces another growth cut through the open.

Positioning inference uses the sentiment score of 18.6 (neutral label) and VIX at 21.67 as proxies. That combination says crowded growth expressions took a second cut and a further de-risk step from 22.7, but 18.6 is not a washout extreme. In prior episodes where vol held above 21 after two tech-led sessions and Europe joined the fade rather than absorbing it, New York either ground a partial repair or sold the first bounce once the strip reopened soft. Invalidation for further downside: a firm reclaim and grind back through the 28384.85 zone on rising breadth. Invalidation for any bounce attempt: VIX staying above 21.67 into the open and NAS100 printing a fresh session low on the strip.

AAPL reported Monday alongside Palantir Tech, Vertex, Marriott International and a long list of others. Name-specific noise sat under the index tape and can still fake a bounce that fails on the strip. FX offers little translation cushion: USD/JPY at 158.24 is firmer, so any JP225 bounce was not propped by a softer yen. DXY at 101.86 is only mildly firmer, which keeps this as an equity beta selloff rather than a dollar event.

US CPI 10 November

Is the tape priced for a surprise into next Tuesday’s print?

The publish question is whether the tape is already priced for a surprise when US CPI lands on Tuesday 10 November. The data block carries no consensus estimate, no prior CPI print, and no implied-move number, so the analysis will not invent one. What the tape does show is a two-session growth mark already in place: NAS100 down from 28384.85 to 27989.82, US500 at 7541.4 minus 0.51pc, NVDA at 202.06, AVGO at 322.23, MSFT at 507.12 minus 2.83pc, and VIX accepted at 21.67 above the 20.17 five-day average. Sentiment at 18.6, neutral and down 4.1 day-on-day from 22.7, adds a positioning proxy that says residual bullish growth exposure is lighter than it was at the prior reference close.

What that means for positioning into the release: the easy growth expression has already been stopped or trimmed, inferred from the size of the peer drawdown, from VIX holding 21.67, and from the 18.6 sentiment score used as a proxy rather than a primary signal. As a proxy stack, that combination has historically meant a mid-cycle inflation print lands on a book that has started to de-risk. A soft outcome can still squeeze what is left in growth beta; a firm outcome lands on a book that has already cut and can gap the beta again. The work before 10 November is mechanical: map NAS100 27989.82, NVDA 202.06 and AVGO 322.23 as the tell-tales through the New York passes this week, and treat a failure to defend 27989.82 as confirmation that the cut is not done ahead of the print.

What proves the “already marked” thesis wrong: if NAS100 and the semi peers stabilise and grind higher into the CPI window without a vol crush, the market is no longer pricing stress and a firm print would re-open downside that looked closed. What proves it right: if peers keep making lower highs into the result and VIX stays bid above the 20.17 five-day average, then even a fair outcome can lift the book because the mark has been taken. Historically, readings this heavy across two growth sessions ahead of a mid-month inflation release have either exhausted sellers early or required another leg once the print confirmed demand heat; the tell is whether 27989.82 acts as a floor or becomes another ceiling. Until then, Pre-NY trades the bruise on the board, not a number we cannot price from this block.

Key Levels

Where New York forces a decision

Instrument Level Pre-NY setup
Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) 27989.82 Lose it on the strip and growth books cut again through the open; defend it and the bounce attempt earns one clean try into the CPI window.
S&P 500 (US500) 7541.4 A break under this mark drags the broad tape with the growth bruise; hold it and beta desks can probe a mean-revert on the open.
VIX 21.67 Stay above here and hedges stay paid through the session; a slip back under 21.15 kills urgency on fresh put buying.
Gold (XAU/USD) 3923.7 The 1.16pc drop says the haven bid remains sold; lose this mark again and de-leveraging retakes the metal sleeve.
Crude Oil WTI (CL) 97.21 The 0.78pc lift restores a thin cyclical cushion; break lower and industrial books add pressure rather than support.
Nvidia (NVDA) 202.06 The tell-tale for the whole growth book into the CPI window; a fresh low here keeps the bearish skew paid, a stabilisation lets a squeeze form.
Economic Calendar

Asia diary largely spent, Japan offline, price leads

Verified diary in the block is front-loaded into the Asia morning: RBA Interest Rate Decision, RBA statements and press conference, Riyad Bank PMI, MAS bill auctions, and Turkish inflation prints (MoM, YoY, core). By Pre-NY those marks are largely spent, so the New York open trades price reaction rather than a fresh headline cluster. Japan holidays today, which thins Tokyo participation and shifts more discovery onto the US strip. The next named US inflation event the desk is working toward is CPI on Tuesday 10 November, and the block carries no consensus for it. Earnings flow was heavy Monday with AAPL, Palantir Tech, Vertex, Marriott International and others, so single-name noise can still distort the strip without changing the regime. Write the handoff as price-led. Weight falls on NAS100 at 27989.82, VIX at 21.67, and whether UK100 and GER40 stabilise after the fade.

Ethical Lens

Values read on this handoff

The live ethical weight sits on post-earnings digestion in AAPL and the semi complex, plus another give-back in Gold and Silver. A values-aware desk treats the 1.83pc AAPL slip and the chip cut as a screen on supply-chain labour standards and energy intensity in AI buildout, not just a beta trade. The 1.16pc Gold drop and 2.88pc Silver wash remove a clean haven sleeve for capital that wants ballast without fossil beta; size the metal fade as a liquidity event, not a clean values exit. CL at 97.21 firmer 0.78pc keeps energy intensity on the board into CPI week: any rebound in industrial demand has a carbon cost the desk should flag beside the price.

Scenarios & Bias

Four paths for the New York strip

Scenario Likelihood What it looks like
Bullish repair Alternate NAS100 holds 27989.82, NVDA stabilises above 202.06, VIX slips under 21.15, and breadth lifts US500 through 7541.4 on the open.
Sideways grind Base case Range holds around NAS100 27989.82 and US500 7541.4, VIX oscillates near 21.67, Europe stays flat after the fade, and CPI week pricing stays unfinished.
Correction leg Alternate NAS100 loses 27989.82 on the strip, MSFT and NVDA print fresh session lows, VIX pushes through 21.67, and UK100/GER40 extend the fade.
Black swan Tail Gap stress hits multiple sleeves at once: metals and growth break together, DXY spikes through 101.86, and hedges cannot be rolled without dislocation.

Risk for the Pre-NY sits at ELEVATED: two consecutive risk-off regime reads, VIX 21.67 above the 20.17 five-day average, sentiment down to 18.6 from 22.7, Europe joining the fade, and Japan offline into a CPI-week build. Sizing guidance is REDUCED until NAS100 defends 27989.82 on rising breadth; MAX only if that defence prints with VIX accepting back under 21.15.

By Experience Level

How to sit this open

Beginner: Watch NAS100 27989.82 and VIX 21.67 only. If both break the wrong way together, stay flat rather than chase the first bounce into CPI week.

Intermediate: Pair NVDA 202.06 with US500 7541.4. A dual hold lets a measured mean-revert try; a dual break keeps the bearish skew and argues for REDUCED size into the strip.

Advanced: Map the factor split (AMZN and TSLA bid versus MSFT, AAPL, NVDA offered) against DXY 101.86 and Gold 3923.7. Fade any bounce that arrives with metals still offered and vol still bid above 21.67.

Bias

Bias in one sentence: Bearish on crowded growth beta into the New York open while NAS100 sits under 28384.85 and VIX holds above the 20.17 five-day average, with the CPI 10 November path still unfinished.
