Pre-NY Brief 2 Nov 2026: US CPI lands Tuesday 10 November. Is the tape priced for a surprise?

US CPI lands Tuesday 10 November. Is the tape priced for a surprise?

Pre-NY · CPI digestion · Monday · 08:00 New York / 13:00 London / 22:00 Tokyo

The one-breath open: Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) holds 28384.85 after a 3.46pc US washout, Nvidia (NVDA) at 204.64 and Broadcom (AVGO) at 326.08 still define the bruise, and US CPI lands Tuesday 10 November with no consensus figure in the block; the open question for New York is whether that mark is deep enough to absorb a print surprise or whether another leg is required first.

Tape Since Last Brief

Europe absorbed the scar without a second cascade

US equity left a clean wound into the European handoff. NAS100 finished 28384.85 against 29402.51, down 3.46pc. S&P 500 (US500) printed 7580.07, down 1.82pc. Dow Jones (US30) 51770.31, down 1.09pc. Russell 2000 (US2000) 2811.84, down 1.66pc. Mega-cap breadth confirmed the cut was broad: Microsoft (MSFT) 521.91 minus 1.55pc, Meta (META) 614.99 minus 1.53pc, Amazon (AMZN) 240.35 minus 1.41pc, Alphabet (GOOGL) 279.84 minus 1.4pc, Apple (AAPL) 344.63 minus 1.23pc, Tesla (TSLA) 399.81 minus 0.87pc. NVDA and AVGO did the heaviest work at minus 4.22pc and minus 5.48pc.

Europe did not extend that gap into a full rout. FTSE 100 (UK100) last 10709.57, only 0.19pc softer. DAX 40 (GER40) 25795.02, down 0.09pc. CAC 40 (FRA40) 7974.61, up 0.07pc. Asia’s final read was mixed rather than panicked: Nikkei 225 (JP225) 63081.86, down 0.33pc; Hang Seng (HK50) 23393.32, up 0.42pc. That split hands New York a choice: either lock a stabilisation attempt on the first US bid, or fade it if futures print a fresh low under 28384.85.

Vol cooled a touch without surrendering the regime. VIX last 19.19 against a prior close of 19.42, a one-day slip of 0.23, and sits just above the five-day average of 18.83. Sentiment gauge 25.2 with a neutral label, down 1.0 from 26.2. As a positioning proxy that stack says growth expressions were forced lighter, yet 25.2 is not a capitulation wash. Historically, when VIX holds the high teens after one tech-led session and the next regional pass refuses a cascade, the following New York open either grinds sideways on residual de-risking or stabilises once the first dip bid appears.

Cross-asset map stays inconsistent. Gold (XAU/USD) 3909.5, up 0.27pc. Silver (XAG/USD) 50.12, up 2.07pc. Metals found a bid after the wash. Crude Oil WTI (CL) 99.52, down 4.42pc from 104.12. Brent (BZ) 108.66, down 7.63pc from 117.64. Energy gave back firmness and no longer offsets equity stress. Bitcoin (BTC) 77669.89, down 0.74pc, softens without confirming a full equity break. US Dollar Index (DXY) 101.6, softer 0.28pc. EUR/USD 1.1215 up 0.28pc, GBP/USD 1.3417 up 0.28pc, USD/JPY 157.9 almost flat. Soft dollar, hard growth beta, firm metals, soft crude: trade the equity bruise, not a macro shock, into the New York open.

What We Called vs What Happened

Score the Pre-London anchors

Two anchors from the prior brief. First: “NAS100 surrendered 3.46pc to 28384.85 with NVDA and AVGO leading the damage.” Confirmed and unchanged into this handoff; those prints remain the reference for every growth hedge into New York. Second: “If JP225 gaps with NAS100 and HK50 fails to hold the prior bid, the desk treats the whole region as one risk book.” Part-right only. JP225 softened just 0.33pc to 63081.86 and HK50 advanced 0.42pc to 23393.32, so the overnight and European passes refused the full cascade the US close invited. Stabilisation got a try; it is not yet proven into the New York open.

Session Setup

Pre-NY inherits a risk-off book with thin catalysts

Regime on the analysis read stays risk-off, same as yesterday. That sets sizing posture, not a forecast of collapse. Pre-NY liquidity thickens into the US open, and the first hour on NAS100, US500 and US30 either accepts the prior mark or probes a mean-revert that dies if futures print a fresh session low. With NAS100 more than a thousand points under its prior close in absolute terms (28384.85 versus 29402.51), any bounce that fails to put the 29000 zone back in view keeps the bearish skew intact for the US day.

Positioning inference uses the sentiment score of 25.2 (neutral label) and VIX at 19.19 as proxies. That combination says the most crowded growth expressions were shaken, but 25.2 is not a washout. In prior episodes where vol held the high teens after a single tech-led session and the next regional open held rather than cascaded, the following New York session either ground sideways on residual de-risking or stabilised once the first bid appeared. Invalidation for stabilisation: VIX accepting back above 19.42 into the US afternoon and NAS100 futures making a fresh low. Invalidation for further downside: a reclaim of the prior US close zone on rising breadth, which we do not have yet.

FX offers little translation cushion. USD/JPY at 157.9 is almost flat, so JP225 is not being propped by a softer yen. DXY at 101.6 is not chasing higher, which confirms this is an equity beta selloff rather than a dollar shock. Japan flags a holiday tomorrow, so Tuesday’s Tokyo liquidity thins and Monday’s New York session carries more of the week’s price discovery into the mid-November CPI window. AAPL, Palantir Tech, Marriott International and several others report today: name-specific noise will sit under the index tape and can fake a bounce that fails on the futures strip.

CPI Into 10 November

Is the tape priced for a Tuesday 10 November surprise?

The publish headline asks whether the tape is priced for a surprise when US CPI lands on Tuesday 10 November. The data block carries no consensus estimate, no prior print, and no implied-move figure, so the analysis will not invent one. What the tape does show is the growth complex already marked hard: NVDA down 4.22pc to 204.64, AVGO down 5.48pc to 326.08, and NAS100 down 3.46pc to 28384.85. That is the full evidence set. When the two most liquid AI-proxy names and the growth index itself gap lower by that order in a single session, the market has cut exposure to the beta that a hot CPI would punish again.

What that means for positioning: residual bullish holds in growth are lighter than they were at the prior close, inferred from the size of the peer drawdown, from VIX holding 19.19 (above the 18.83 five-day average), and from the sentiment score of 25.2 used as a proxy rather than a primary signal. As a proxy stack, that combination has historically meant the easy growth expression has been stopped or trimmed, so a soft CPI can squeeze what is left, while a hot print lands on a complex that has started to de-risk and can gap the beta again. The work before 10 November is mechanical: map NVDA 204.64 and AVGO 326.08 as the tell-tales into the release, and treat a failure of NAS100 to defend the 28384.85 zone on Monday and into next week as confirmation that the cut is not done.

What proves the “priced for a surprise” thesis wrong: if NAS100 and the semi peers stabilise and grind higher into 10 November without a vol crush, the market is not pricing stress anymore and a hot number would re-open downside that looked closed. What proves it right: if peers keep making lower highs into the print and VIX stays bid above the 18.83 five-day average, then even a fair result can lift the complex because the mark has been taken. Until then, Pre-NY trades the bruise on the board, not a number we cannot price from this block. Historically, readings this heavy in a single growth session ahead of a mid-month inflation print have either exhausted the sellers early or required a second leg once the print confirmed demand heat; the tell is whether 28384.85 holds as a floor or becomes a ceiling.

Key Levels

Where New York forces a decision

Instrument Level Pre-NY setup
Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) 28384.85 Lose it on the futures strip and growth books cut again through the US day; defend it and the bounce attempt earns one clean try into the close.
S&P 500 (US500) 7580.07 A break under this print drags the broad tape with the growth bruise rather than fading it; hold and beta desks can probe a mean-revert.
VIX 19.19 Accept back above 19.42 and hedges stay paid through the US afternoon; a slip under the 18.83 five-day average kills urgency on fresh put buying.
Gold (XAU/USD) 3909.5 The 0.27pc lift after the prior wash confirms a metal bid is returning; lose this print and de-leveraging is back in charge of the haven complex.
Crude Oil WTI (CL) 99.52 The 4.42pc drop removes energy as an offset; break lower and cyclical books add pressure rather than cushion into the US close.
Nvidia (NVDA) 204.64 The tell-tale for the whole growth complex into CPI week; a fresh low here keeps the bearish skew paid, a hold lets a squeeze attempt form.
Economic Calendar

Light diary, price action leads

No verified economic-calendar releases are supplied for this session, and no holiday flags sit on today. Japan carries a holiday tomorrow, which thins Tuesday’s Tokyo participation and shifts more of the week’s discovery onto New York. Earnings flow is heavy on the tape today with AAPL, Palantir Tech, Vertex, Marriott International and several others due, so single-name noise can distort index prints without changing the regime. Write the session as price-led. Weight falls on NAS100 at 28384.85, VIX at 19.19, and the US open prints. Do not invent a macro catalyst; trade the marks you have. The next named macro event on the book is US CPI on Tuesday 10 November, eight sessions out, and that window is the real positioning horizon.

Ethical Lens

Values read on this tape

Monday’s live ethical weight sits on the semi complex and on the energy reverse. NVDA and AVGO drove the beta cut that New York must price, and both sit at the centre of AI infrastructure spend with real power and water externalities; a values-aware book does not chase a mechanical bounce in names it would not carry through a full cycle. WTI’s drop to 99.52 against an already soft equity tape also warrants scrutiny: energy weakness that arrives with growth stress often reflects demand concern rather than a clean supply story, so size energy expressions with that friction in view rather than as a blunt hedge. British American Tobacco ADR also reports today: tobacco names sit outside most ethical mandates, so treat any index contribution from that print as noise, not a signal to add.

Scenarios & Bias

Four paths into the New York open

Scenario Likelihood What it looks like
Bull stabilisation Alternate NAS100 defends 28384.85, VIX slips under 18.83, NVDA holds 204.64, and breadth improves enough that the bounce earns a full US session try without a fresh low.
Sideways grind Base case Index chops around the US mark, VIX stays near 19.19, single-name earnings noise swings AAPL and peers without shifting regime, and the day ends inside Friday’s range.
Correction extension Alternate Futures lose 28384.85 early, NVDA and AVGO print fresh session lows, VIX accepts back above 19.42, and US500 follows through under 7580.07 on weak breadth.
Black swan gap Tail An unscheduled shock or a disorderly crude break under 99.52 collides with thin post-washout liquidity, VIX spikes well clear of 19.42, and correlated selling hits every beta book at once.

Risk for the Pre-NY sits at ELEVATED: the regime is risk-off, NAS100 is 3.46pc off its prior close, crude has lost 4.42pc, and the sentiment proxy at 25.2 has not washed out enough to signal exhausted sellers. Sizing guidance is REDUCED into the open; scale only if 28384.85 holds on rising breadth and VIX refuses to reclaim 19.42. MAX size is reserved for a confirmed stabilisation with vol compression, which we do not have yet.

By Experience Level

How to sit this open

Beginner: Watch NAS100 at 28384.85 and VIX at 19.19 only; if both hold without a fresh break, stay flat and let the first two hours define the day rather than forcing a view into residual washout noise.

Intermediate: Pair the NAS100 defence with NVDA at 204.64 as your confirmation: a hold in both with VIX under 19.42 allows a small mean-revert probe; a break in either keeps you REDUCED and reactive only.

Advanced: Fade strength that fails to reclaim the prior US close zone on weak breadth, and treat silver’s 2.07pc bid at 50.12 as a relative haven sleeve rather than a blunt equity substitute; size against the CPI window eight sessions out, not against today’s earnings noise.

Bias

Net read into the open

Bias in one sentence: Bearish-leaning into Pre-NY while NAS100 sits 3.46pc below its prior close and VIX holds above its five-day average, with stabilisation only earned if 28384.85 defends and the semi tell-tales stop making lower highs ahead of the 10 November CPI window.
