Into Jackson Hole, one-sided and unhedged into the Pre-NY session

Pre-NY · Energy Fracture · Tuesday · 09:00 New York / 14:00 London / 22:00 Tokyo

The one-breath open: London hands New York a still-neutral regime with Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) stuck −0.97% at 29023.18, S&P 500 (US500) −0.28% at 7652.86, Dow Jones (US30) +0.26% at 53417.16, VIX at 15.78, Gold (XAU/USD) +1.06% at 4690.0, and Crude Oil WTI (CL) −3.2% at 82.29; stay REDUCED on broken growth and energy-sensitive gross, STANDARD only where Europe and breadth held, and do not treat a green Dow or a softer VIX as permission to reload full Nasdaq beta into the cash open.

Tape Recap

What the tape just did

The US cash map London was told to respect is still the map New York has to open against. Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) marks 29023.18 against 29308.86, down 0.97%. That lost prior mark was not repaired through the full European session and it is the first number the NY open has to price. S&P 500 (US500) holds 7652.86 against 7674.37, down 0.28%: soft enough to keep gross honest, not soft enough to call a washout. Dow Jones (US30) still pays the breadth thesis at 53417.16 against 53277.01, up 0.26%. Russell 2000 (US2000) remains offered at 2995.08 against 3017.87, down 0.76%. When the Dow holds, Nasdaq is still nearly a full percent lighter, and small caps sit three-quarters of a point down, New York inherits a rotation problem first. Anyone running identical size across all four US indices into the cash open is still ignoring the close.

Europe’s full session is the local handoff and it is no longer one ticket of weakness. FTSE 100 (UK100) last 10863.76 against 10854.3, up 0.09%. London defended and added a touch. DAX 40 (GER40) last 26286.09 against 26106.6, up 0.69%. CAC 40 (FRA40) last 8475.19 against 8453.01, up 0.26%. The continent repaired what the Pre-London book still had offered. That is a real consequence for sizing: UK and continental sleeves that held structure earned a path back toward STANDARD, while US growth beta did not. A single “Europe equals Nasdaq” sleeve into the NY open is lazy risk.

Asia’s finished handoff still shapes how you size the global book into NY. Nikkei 225 (JP225) last 65856.43 against 65528.09, up 0.5%. Japan printed a constructive session versus its own prior close. Hang Seng (HK50) last 25511.1 against 25517.33, down 0.02%. The earlier reclaim never rebuilt. The desk read into NY is blunt: JP225 earned a path to STANDARD only while it holds the overnight gain; HK50 stays REDUCED until structure rebuilds. A single “Asia is fixed” book remains a process failure.

Vol is still the sizing governor even after a mild cool. VIX last 15.78 against 15.85 prior, down 0.44% on the session reference, with the five-day average at 15.58. Fear and greed sits at 54.6, labelled neutral, a −0.4 drift from 55.0. Sentiment cooled off the greed label while vol still sits above its five-day average and Nasdaq is still nearly a percent lighter. That split is how process accounts get hurt into a NY open: neutral on the label, unrepaired growth structure on the tape. STANDARD only where structure held. REDUCED where it broke. AVOID chasing broken high-beta names into the first hour of cash.

FX kept the dollar firm and metals stayed split, which keeps the hedge read honest. US Dollar Index (DXY) last 99.02, up 0.02% from 99.0. EUR/USD at 1.1669, down 0.11%. GBP/USD at 1.3632, down 0.16%. USD/JPY 159.27, up 0.23% from 158.9. Dollar bid means gold’s hold is still working against a headwind. Gold (XAU/USD) last 4690.0, up 1.06% from 4640.8. That is still a defensive session win even after giving back the London reference near 4702.4. Silver (XAG/USD) last 67.83, down 1.04% from 68.54. Same gold/silver filter: defensive bid in gold, no full risk-on metals ramp. Crude Oil WTI (CL) 82.29, down 3.2% from 85.01. Brent (BZ) 87.86, down 4.68% from 92.17. Energy did not pause. It extended. That growth question mark is now the loudest cross-asset signal into NY cash, not a footnote.

Single-name tape still explains why Nasdaq lost and the Dow held. Nvidia (NVDA) closed 208.48 against 214.72, down 2.91%. Tesla (TSLA) closed 348.95 against 362.86, down 3.83%. Broadcom (AVGO) closed 358.76 against 368.45, down 2.63%. Against that, Meta (META) +1.66% to 559.02, Amazon (AMZN) +1.33% to 262.07, Alphabet (GOOGL) +0.94% to 348.06, Microsoft (MSFT) +0.84% to 487.31, Apple (AAPL) +0.32% to 310.34. Leadership did not leave tech. It left the crowded semiconductor and high-beta sleeve and paid the platform names. Bitcoin (BTC) last 78930.93, down 0.04% from 78964.48, has fully given back the earlier spike the Pre-London book flagged. Trade the NY open off acceptance of this split close and the energy fracture, not off one hero ticker or one villain.

What We Called vs What Happened

Scoring the Pre-London book

The Pre-London brief is on the scorecard now. Honesty first: the split-close map held through the European session, gold kept a defensive win versus its prior close, energy extended lower hard, and the sizing governor on unrepaired Nasdaq was the right process call. Europe’s repair was the surprise that paid the separate-books filter.

We said London should “stay REDUCED on broken growth structure, STANDARD only where breadth held, and do not treat a green Dow or a Bitcoin spike as permission to reload the full Nasdaq book into the London cash open.” Confirmed on the print. NAS100 still marks 29023.18 (−0.97%), US30 still marks 53417.16 (+0.26%), and Bitcoin has fully reversed the spike to 78930.93 (−0.04%). Anyone who reloaded full Nasdaq beta off the Dow or the Bitcoin print ignored the handoff into NY.

On gold we wrote that holding the advance “keeps the defensive bid alive and supports a REDUCED-to-STANDARD hedge sleeve into cash.” Part-right. Gold still prints a +1.06% session win at 4690.0 against 4640.8, so the defensive job versus the prior close is intact. The metal did give back the London reference near 4702.4, so the sleeve stays REDUCED-to-STANDARD, not a full chase. Silver’s −1.04% to 67.83 still warns you not to run the whole complex as one trade.

On energy we flagged that “If crude extends lower into a weak European open, reduce gross on energy-sensitive books and keep index risk tighter.” Confirmed, and then some. WTI now prints 82.29 (−3.2%) and Brent 87.86 (−4.68%). The freefall did not pause; it accelerated. The growth question mark is live and louder into the NY open. On Europe we said FTSE holding while the continent stayed offered meant “London can stay STANDARD on the UK sleeve and REDUCED on the continent until Frankfurt and Paris repair.” Part-right on the filter, upgraded on the outcome: FTSE held and added to 10863.76 (+0.09%), and both DAX (+0.69% to 26286.09) and CAC (+0.26% to 8475.19) repaired. The separate-books call was correct; the continent earned the upgrade the filter demanded. From here every call in this Pre-NY note is live for the US cash open.

Session Setup

What New York must prove

Regime is still neutral. That word has teeth after a 0.97% Nasdaq cut that was not repaired, a green Dow, VIX still at 15.78 above its 15.58 five-day average, gold holding a +1.06% defensive win at 4690.0, crude cracking −3.2% to 82.29, and Bitcoin flatlining near 78930.93 after giving back the spike. You do not press a full risk-on thesis off a softer VIX print and a DAX repair, and you do not dump every global long because US growth beta and energy had a heavy day. The analysis read wants acceptance or rejection of yesterday’s US split close against still-elevated vol and fractured energy, not a narrative rewrite in the first hour of NY cash.

For Nasdaq 100 (NAS100), the 29023.18 mark and the broken 29308.86 prior close mean New York either starts a real repair bid toward that lost base or it extends the offered tone into the cash session. If futures stabilise and build back toward the lost structure while VIX stays contained, the desk can move from REDUCED toward STANDARD on a confirmed reclaim only. If NAS100 stays offered through the open without a base, keep gross light and do not average down broken semiconductor beta. Consequence: no reclaim, no add.

S&P 500 (US500) at 7652.86 after −0.28% is the broad pressure valve into cash. Holding that print keeps the complex from reading as a pure risk-off handoff. Losing it quickly in NY with crude still offered and VIX above its five-day average is how you get a true risk trim across the book. Watch whether any early bid is real on volume. A one-tick fade that recovers is noise. A stair-step lower with energy still offered is a message.

Dow Jones (US30) at 53417.16 after +0.26% remains the breadth tell. If the Dow holds its gain while Nasdaq wobbles again into cash, keep trading rotation inside US beta rather than a single “tech is dead” headline. If both break together with Russell 2000 (US2000) at 2995.08 failing further, yesterday’s trim is winning the multi-session argument and you cut gross again.

Europe already did the work London demanded. FTSE 100 (UK100) at 10863.76 after +0.09%, DAX 40 (GER40) at 26286.09 after +0.69%, and CAC 40 (FRA40) at 8475.19 after +0.26% mean continental and UK sleeves that held can stay STANDARD into the NY overlap unless crude’s fracture drags them. If those prints reverse hard with WTI still offered, cut Europe with the energy book. Do not run one global ticket.

Gold at 4690.0 after +1.06% is the NY barometer if equities chop. Holding the advance while DXY sits near 99.02 keeps the defensive bid alive and supports a REDUCED-to-STANDARD hedge sleeve into cash. A sharp give-back in gold with equities still trying to stabilise would say the metal move is crowded, not structural. Silver’s lag at 67.83 already tells you not to treat the whole metals complex as one ticket.

Energy is the growth tell New York cannot ignore. WTI 82.29 (−3.2%) and Brent 87.86 (−4.68%) extended the break. If crude stabilises into the open, equity bulls keep a narrow benefit of the doubt on cyclicals. If crude extends lower into a weak US open, reduce gross on energy-sensitive books and keep index risk tighter. That is consequence, not colour.

Bitcoin at 78930.93 after −0.04% is no longer a risk-appetite print. It keeps the crypto book honest and it does not rewrite the Nasdaq structure at 29023.18. Trade BTC on its own book. Do not let residual hope of the earlier spike bully you into full growth beta while VIX sits at 15.78 and semiconductors remain offered.

Tuesday’s earnings list hits the cash session hard: Bank of Montreal, Bank of Nova Scotia, Intuit, Zoom Video, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Heico, Gold Fields ADR, Grupo Mexico, Semtech, and others on the board. Pre-NY is not the place to front-run residual reactions with oversized directional bets. Position for open structure. Leave the earnings lottery for confirmed prints and confirmed follow-through, not for hope.

Sentiment at 54.6 neutral with VIX 15.78 is still the classic trap for lazy stops. The desk read is clear: neutral on the label with vol above its five-day average and unrepaired Nasdaq is when process dies. Tighten process, not conviction slogans. The verified calendar into this window already carried German GDP Growth Rate QoQ Final Q2 and related Asia prints; what remains is price structure and cross-asset confirmation. Do not invent a catalyst. Trade what the tape accepts.

Key Levels

Levels that force a decision

Instrument Level Pre-NY setup
Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) 29023.18 / 29308.86 No reclaim of 29308.86 means REDUCED only; losing 29023.18 into cash forces another cut on growth beta.
S&P 500 (US500) 7652.86 Hold keeps the complex tradable at STANDARD where breadth helps; a clean break with crude offered is a book-wide trim.
Dow Jones (US30) 53417.16 Holding the +0.26% gain keeps the rotation thesis alive; failure with Russell confirms the multi-session cut.
Crude Oil WTI (CL) 82.29 Stabilisation gives cyclicals a narrow benefit of the doubt; extension lower means AVOID fresh energy-sensitive gross.
Gold (XAU/USD) 4690.0 Hold above the prior-close win keeps the REDUCED-to-STANDARD hedge sleeve; a sharp give-back kills the chase.
DAX 40 (GER40) 26286.09 The +0.69% repair earned STANDARD into the overlap; lose it with crude still offered and cut the continental sleeve.
Economic Calendar

What is already on the board

The verified slate into this window already carried RBA Meeting Minutes, RBA Jacobs Speech, Japan Coincident Index Final JUN, Japan Leading Economic Index Final JUN, German GDP Growth Rate QoQ Final Q2 at 0.3% versus 0.4% reference, German GDP Growth Rate YoY Final Q2, and the Saudi balance-of-trade complex. Those prints are behind the London handoff. Into the NY open the desk is not inventing fresh catalysts. Price structure, crude’s fracture, and the earnings tape carry the weight. Bank of Montreal, Bank of Nova Scotia, Intuit, Zoom Video, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Heico, Gold Fields ADR, and the rest of Tuesday’s list will move single names. Trade confirmed follow-through only. Do not front-run with MAX size into headlines that have not printed.

No holidays sit on today’s board and none sit on tomorrow’s. That keeps liquidity honest and removes the excuse of a thin tape. Process still governs: REDUCED on broken structure, STANDARD where Europe and breadth held, AVOID chasing semiconductors and energy beta that have already told you the answer.

Ethical Lens

Values-conscious read for the session

The ethical book does not need a growth chase to stay employed today. Gold’s +1.06% hold at 4690.0 versus a firm dollar keeps a clean defensive sleeve available without forcing leverage into unrepaired Nasdaq structure. Energy’s −3.2% break in WTI and −4.68% break in Brent is a hard filter on fossil-linked cyclicals: values-conscious accounts that already run lighter energy beta are not being punished for discipline, they are being protected by it. Platform names that held (Meta, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Apple) still screen cleaner on governance and cash-flow quality than the crowded semiconductor sleeve that is still offered. Prefer STANDARD exposure where breadth and Europe repaired. Keep REDUCED or AVOID on names whose only thesis is momentum inside a broken high-beta complex. Capital preservation is not a side quest on a neutral regime day with crude fracturing; it is the job.

Scenarios & Bias

How the cash open can resolve

Scenario Probability What it looks like
Bull repair 22% NAS100 reclaims toward 29308.86, US500 holds 7652.86, crude stabilises above 82.29, VIX fades under 15.78, breadth stays with the Dow. Only then lift growth sleeves from REDUCED toward STANDARD.
Sideways rotation 40% Dow holds 53417.16, Nasdaq chops under the lost base, Europe keeps its repair, gold stays bid near 4690.0. Trade rotation, not regime. STANDARD on breadth, REDUCED on broken growth.
Correction extend 30% NAS100 loses 29023.18, US500 breaks 7652.86, WTI extends under 82.29, Russell fails again, VIX pushes back through 15.85. Cut gross. AVOID fresh high-beta adds.
Black swan 8% Disordered break across equities, crude, and FX together with VIX spiking away from 15.78. Protect first. Flat is a position. Rebuild only after structure returns.

Risk for the Pre-NY sits around 58%: unrepaired Nasdaq at −0.97%, crude’s −3.2% extension, VIX still above its 15.58 five-day average, and a neutral 54.6 sentiment label that can lull stops. Size MAX only on confirmed reclaim of lost US growth structure with crude stabilising. STANDARD on Dow breadth and repaired Europe. REDUCED on gold hedges and any residual semiconductor exposure. AVOID averaging down NVDA, TSLA, AVGO, and fresh energy-sensitive gross until the tape accepts a base.

By Experience Level

Size the seat you actually have

Beginner: Do not open the cash session by buying the name that fell hardest yesterday. Nasdaq still marks 29023.18 (−0.97%) and crude is −3.2%. If you trade at all, stick to one clear level on US500 or US30, define the invalidation before entry, and keep size REDUCED. Flat is allowed. Chasing NVDA or TSLA into the open is how small accounts fund someone else’s exit.

Intermediate: Run the split book the tape already wrote. STANDARD on Dow breadth and on Europe’s repair (GER40 +0.69%, UK100 +0.09%). REDUCED on NAS100 until 29308.86 is reclaimed. Treat gold at 4690.0 as a hedge sleeve, not a momentum pile-in, and keep silver’s −1.04% as the warning not to bundle metals. If WTI extends under 82.29 while US500 loses 7652.86, cut cyclicals without debate.

Advanced: Express the rotation explicitly. Stay bullish only where structure held (US30, repaired DAX, platform names that closed green). Stay bearish or flat on the broken semiconductor sleeve and on energy-sensitive gross while CL prints 82.29 (−3.2%) and Brent 87.86 (−4.68%). Fade any blind “VIX cooled so reload Nasdaq” impulse: VIX at 15.78 is still above the 15.58 five-day average and the growth base is not repaired. Hedge with gold on dips toward the prior-close win, not with correlated high-beta that moves with the thing you are hedging. Earnings (INTU, ZM, BMO, BNS, DKS) are single-name volatility, not permission to lever the index book.

Bias

Desk stance into the open

The desk read stays neutral on regime, bullish only on breadth and repaired Europe, bearish on unrepaired Nasdaq growth structure and on energy until crude stops extending. Process over narrative: the green Dow and the softer VIX do not rewrite a −0.97% Nasdaq or a −3.2% crude print.

Bias in one sentence: Neutral regime with a selective lean: bullish breadth and repaired Europe at STANDARD, bearish unrepaired Nasdaq and fractured energy at REDUCED to AVOID until structure accepts a base.

For the deeper cross-checks on the metals and energy filters driving today’s sleeve weights, use the desk’s Gold daily read and the Crude Oil daily read before you resize the hedge and cyclicals books into cash.
