USD/JPY – Daily Read

28 August 2026 | Forex | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
$159.59

USD/JPY is leaning higher at 159.59, 0.1 percent higher on the day, and pressing the top of its one-month range. The immediate bias is bullish because the dollar has regained traction while Japan’s policy outlook remains broadly unchanged. The importance of this move is that price is testing the boundary between another failed recovery and a more meaningful extension higher. Buyers have control at the margin, but they still need to prove that control through the nearby range ceiling.

Hotter than expected inflation prints in France and Spain lifted near term European rate expectations, yet EURUSD and GBPUSD both fell over half a percent as the dollar gained ground on the mixed European numbers. That dollar demand is supporting USD/JPY into the weekend. Japanese labour data held steady and Tokyo CPI showed modest upside, keeping the BoJ policy path intact rather than forcing a sharper repricing. This leaves the broader macro regime balanced, with the pair’s immediate direction more dependent on whether dollar strength can overpower resistance near the range high.

The one month average is 159.05; price is above it, and the structure reads as a recovery attempt, back above the one-month average but still under the longer one. Holding above 159.05 shows that buyers are absorbing routine pullbacks, although momentum roughly 0.1 percent up over the last two weeks says the recovery is persistent rather than forceful. The month swing high is 159.78, about 0.1 percent above the current price. That is the immediate decision point because sellers defending the range have their clearest line there. The nearer round number handle at 160.00 sits just beyond it and could attract both profit taking and fresh breakout demand.

A shelf of support at 156.65, about 1.8 percent below, is the key structural defence. It marks the area where buyers must return if the current test fails. The nearer round number handle at 155.00 adds psychological support beneath that shelf, while the three month range of 154.99 to 163.99 defines the broader battlefield. The proximity of 155.00 to the range floor reinforces that lower zone, but it also means a failure there would materially damage the recovery structure.

If USD/JPY makes a decisive move above 159.78 and then holds 160.00, the range ceiling has given way and the path opens toward 163.99. That bull path would imply that dollar demand is broadening and that resistance has shifted into support. If price rejects 159.78, falls back through 159.05, and selling then removes 156.65, the bear path takes control because losing 156.65 exposes 154.99.

The main risk to the bullish read is a reversal in dollar demand or renewed conviction around faster BoJ tightening. A sustained loss of 156.65 would invalidate the recovery thesis, while repeated failure at 159.78 would warn that buyers lack follow-through. Net, the pair has a constructive upward lean, but confirmation requires a clean break and hold above the range top.
