SPY Failed at 740 and QQQ Closed at Session Low: Three Setups for Thursday’s PCE

Setup Radar | Titan Technical Desk

Wednesday produced one confirmed setup and two pending triggers. The confirmed setup: SPY failed at the 740 call wall, reversed 1.1% from the intraday high, and closed at 732.08 near the session low. That is a textbook failed-breakout reversal. The pending triggers: QQQ needs a close below 705 to confirm a continuation short, and IWM needs to hold above 295 with broad market stabilisation to confirm a rotation long. All three setups share a common dependency: Core PCE on Thursday is the activation catalyst. Without it, the setups are maps without roads. With it, every level identified below becomes executable.

CORE THESIS

Tuesday’s analysis identified NAS100 29,500 and S&P 500 7,400 as the levels to watch, and both broke decisively. Wednesday’s failed rally at SPY 740 creates a new reference point: 740 is now confirmed resistance, and the 732-729 zone is the battleground. QQQ at 707.19 closed at its session low with no bounce attempt, the weakest closing posture of any major index. The setup radar identifies the levels; execution should wait for PCE to resolve the directional ambiguity. As our Volatility Desk warns, negative gamma means stops must be wider than normal for any setup traded through the event.

What We Said Yesterday vs What Actually Happened

Yesterday’s setup analysis documented that “NAS100 broke 29,500 while the Dow held 51,665” and mapped key levels across eight instruments. We noted that “the speed and magnitude of the break is where yesterday’s analysis was incomplete” and flagged negative gamma as the amplifier that pushed moves beyond normal technical expectations.

Wednesday confirmed that the levels were right but the direction was mixed. SPY rallied first, hitting 739.95 before reversing. That rally attempt validated the resistance zone we identified: the 740 call wall that our Positioning Desk documented with 12,969 contracts of open interest. The rejection was clean and the reversal was decisive. QQQ continued lower, closing at 707.19, the session low. NDX at 29,065 also closed at its session low, extending the pattern from Tuesday.

The IWM setup was the surprise. We flagged 2,951 as the intraday low to watch. IWM actually rallied to 299.69 on Wednesday before settling at 296.04. Small-cap relative strength is intact. The rotation thesis from our Macro Desk (long Dow/Russell, short NDX) continues to express cleanly.

Setup 1: SPY Failed-Breakout Reversal (Confirmed)

The cleanest setup on the board. SPY rallied to 739.95, tested the 740 call wall, and reversed to close at 732.08. This is a failed-breakout pattern with a clearly defined trigger, entry zone, target, and invalidation.

SPY FAILED-BREAKOUT REVERSAL

Setup Type Failed rally reversal
Trigger Rejection at 740 (confirmed)
Entry Zone 732-735
Target 725
Invalidation 742 (above call wall)
Risk-Reward ~1:1.4 from entry midpoint

Setup 2: QQQ Continuation Short (Pending)

QQQ closed at 707.19, its session low, with no bounce attempt. NDX at 29,065 also closed at its session low. The closing posture is the weakest of any major index. The trigger for a continuation short is a close below 705, which would breach the expected move floor and open the QQQ 700 round number as the next test.

QQQ CONTINUATION SHORT

Setup Type Trend continuation
Trigger Close below 705 (pending)
Entry Zone 705-707
Target 695
Invalidation 715 (put wall reclaim)
Risk-Reward ~1:1.25 from entry midpoint

Setup 3: IWM Rotation Long (Pending)

IWM closed at 296.04, essentially at max pain (295). The relative strength versus SPY (79bps outperformance) and versus QQQ (115bps outperformance) is striking. If broad market stabilisation occurs on a cool or in-line PCE, IWM is the rotation target.

IWM ROTATION LONG

Setup Type Rotation trade
Trigger Hold above 295 with market stabilisation
Entry Zone 295-296
Target 302
Invalidation 292 (below put support)
Risk-Reward ~1:1.5 from entry midpoint

Contradictions Across Setups

Setup Conflict Resolution
SPY bearish + IWM bullish = contradicting indices This IS the rotation. Not directional, paired. Long IWM / short QQQ is the analysis trade.
Gold defend $4K setup implies risk-off, but gold dropped -3.12% Haven demand collapsing; margin-call liquidation overriding fundamentals.
DIA breakout at 522 vs NDX breakdown Market cannot decide between rotation and risk-off. PCE resolves.

Scenario Analysis

Scenario 1: Hot PCE Activates Bearish Setups | Probability: 40%

SPY failed-breakout targets 725. QQQ continuation short triggers below 705, targets 695. IWM rotation long invalidated as broad risk-off drags small-caps. Gold breaks $3,975 and tests $3,900. All bearish setups fire simultaneously.

Scout size only; confirm with 30-minute close below trigger levels

Scenario 2: In-Line PCE Favours Rotation Setups | Probability: 35%

SPY holds 729-737 range. QQQ does not trigger below 705. IWM rotation long activates as small-cap relative strength continues. The paired trade (long IWM / short QQQ) is the cleanest expression.

Standard size on rotation pairs; half-size on directional

Scenario 3: Cool PCE Reverses All Bearish Setups | Probability: 25%

SPY reclaims 740. QQQ snaps to 715+. IWM rotation continues but with less relative outperformance. The failed-breakout thesis is voided. All bearish setups invalidated in a single session.

Aggressive on confirmation above 740; do not anticipate

Risk Assessment and Sizing

Risk Level: Around 55%

Multiple setups exist but PCE event risk makes timing unreliable. The radar identifies the levels; execution should wait for the catalyst to resolve.

Sizing Guidance: Scout positions only. Half-size entries on setups with clear invalidation. Full-size reserved for post-PCE confirmation moves. The negative gamma environment (documented in our Volatility Desk analysis) means stops must be 1.5-2.0x wider than normal for any position held through the data release.

Experience Guidance: The failed-breakout setup on SPY is the most accessible for all experience levels because the invalidation is clear (above 742) and the target is defined (725). Less experienced participants should avoid the QQQ continuation short because it requires a trigger (close below 705) that may come on a gap, making entry execution difficult. The IWM rotation long is a paired trade that requires simultaneous short exposure in QQQ or NDX, which is more suitable for experienced participants.

How This Entry Scores

Every level named in a session brief is scored against the next scheduled close. Nothing is edited after filing: if a level breaks, the record shows it as filed, not as corrected. The desk's full scored history sits on the track record page.
