S&P 500 (SPX) – Daily Read

The S&P 500 is in a controlled pullback, not yet a broken advance. Last price is 7,624 after the last session finished 0.5 percent lower, and it is down near the floor of its one-month range. That matters because pressure is now concentrated around nearby support, where a relatively small extension could turn routine weakness into a broader correction. The clear view is cautious while price remains below its recent norm, but not outright bearish while the longer trend still points up.
The immediate catalyst is the loss of short-term structure rather than a confirmed change in the larger direction. The one month average is 7,727; price is below it, and the structure reads as a pullback, slipping under the one-month average while the longer trend still points up. Momentum is roughly 2.4 percent down over the last two weeks, which means weaker risk appetite is feeding directly through the index rather than being absorbed quickly. The macro backdrop matters only insofar as uncertainty is making broad equity exposure more sensitive to failed rebounds and support breaks.
The first defensive shelf is support at 7,612, about 0.2 percent below, because it sits close enough to the current price to test whether participants still regard this decline as contained. Holding that shelf would preserve the possibility of stabilization, while losing it would show that nearby demand has failed. The round number handle at 7,500 is the next psychological reference, because sustained trade beneath it would reinforce the message that the pullback is broadening. The three month range is 7,314 to 7,845, with the lower boundary representing the deeper support that anchors the longer advance. On the upside, 7,750 is the nearer round number handle that must be recovered before the month swing high at 7,845, about 2.9 percent above the current price, can come back into play.
The bull path is straightforward: if 7,612 holds and the index reclaims 7,727, then the pullback begins to look absorbed rather than extended. If that recovery also clears 7,750, then attention shifts toward 7,845, where prior supply and the top of the three month range must be overcome. A decisive move above 7,845 opens the path toward 8,000, because that would resolve the range upward and restore momentum to the larger advance. The bear path starts if 7,612 fails decisively. If that happens, then 7,500 becomes the immediate test, and losing that handle would increase the probability of a fuller range retracement. Losing 7,612 exposes 7,314, because the nearest shelf would no longer be containing pressure.
The main risk to the cautious view is a fast recovery through 7,727 and 7,750, because that would show the recent weakness lacked follow-through and would invalidate the assumption that pressure remains active. Conversely, a sustained break below 7,612 would invalidate the controlled-pullback interpretation and make 7,314 the relevant downside reference. Net, 7,612 is the pivot: hold it and recovery remains credible, lose it and the correction has room to deepen.
Key levels: support 7,612 (0.2% below), resistance 7,845 (2.9% above), one-month average 7,727, three-month range 7,314 to 7,845.
