FTSE 100 (UKX) – Daily Read

The FTSE 100 is consolidating a recovery rather than stalling outright. Last price 10,725, with the index little changed on the session (under 0.05%), masks a constructive underlying position because it is holding in the upper half of its one-month range. The clear view is cautiously positive while that position persists: recent progress has absorbed near-term pressure, but the index has not yet cleared the ceiling needed to turn recovery into a broader advance. That distinction matters because strength inside a range is encouraging, while strength through resistance changes positioning and expands the available upside.
The macro backdrop is supportive only insofar as calmer policy expectations and shifts in sterling, energy and commodity exposure affect the FTSE 100 differently from more domestically concentrated UK assets. The index is above its one month average 10,613, and the structure reads as a recovery attempt, back above the one-month average but still under the longer one. Momentum is roughly 2.8 percent up over the last two weeks, which means demand has improved meaningfully, though not enough to prove that the larger consolidation has ended. Its multinational earnings mix can cushion domestic weakness, but currency and commodity reversals can also interrupt progress quickly.
The first test is the nearer round number handle at 10,750 because it sits just above the market and can determine whether the current pause becomes continuation or rejection. Above that, the month swing high 10,823, about 0.9 percent above the current price, is the decisive resistance because it marks where the recovery last ran out of room. The broader three month range 10,227 to 10,990 places that resistance below the range ceiling, which means clearing it would create space without immediately resolving the entire range. On weakness, the nearer round number handle at 10,500 should provide the first meaningful defence. The shelf of support at 10,367, about 3.3 percent below, matters more because it anchors the recovery structure and separates an orderly pullback from renewed range deterioration.
The bull path is straightforward: if 10,750 is absorbed and subsequent weakness holds above it, then pressure can build against 10,823 because prior resistance would be showing signs of becoming support. A decisive move above 10,823 opens the path toward 10,990, which means the market would be testing the upper boundary of the three month range rather than merely rebounding within it. The bear path begins if 10,750 repeatedly rejects progress and 10,500 then fails to hold. In that case, attention returns to 10,367 because losing 10,367 exposes 10,227 and would signal that the recent advance lacked durable sponsorship.
The principal risk to the constructive read is a sharp reversal in the currency or commodity backdrop, coupled with failure around 10,750, because the FTSE 100’s sector mix can transmit those moves rapidly. The view is invalidated by sustained trade below 10,367, which means the recovery attempt has broken and the lower end of the wider range is back in play. Conversely, hesitation beneath 10,823 does not itself invalidate the thesis while 10,500 and then 10,367 remain defended. Net, the index retains a positive bias, but conviction should rise only through 10,823 and fall materially beneath 10,367.
Key levels: support 10,367 (3.3% below), resistance 10,823 (0.9% above), one-month average 10,613, three-month range 10,227 to 10,990.
