Copper – Daily Read

$6.40
Copper is correcting inside an intact longer-term advance, but the burden of proof has shifted to the upside because the last price at $6.40 is 2.7 percent lower on the session and down near the floor of its one-month range. The clear view is cautiously constructive only while nearby support holds. This matters because weakness at the bottom of a recent range can either become a reset that preserves the broader rise or the start of a deeper repricing across a commodity whose price often reflects confidence in physical demand.
The immediate catalyst is position reduction after price failed to sustain the upper part of its recent range, with momentum roughly 2.8 percent down over the last two weeks. The one month average is $6.62; price is below it, and the structure reads as a pullback, slipping under the one-month average while the longer trend still points up. That tension matters because softer global growth expectations can pressure an economically sensitive metal quickly, while the longer trend keeps the retreat from automatically becoming a reversal. The month swing high at $6.93, about 8.3 percent above the current price, now marks where confidence would have to return decisively.
The first defense is the shelf of support at $6.38, about 0.3 percent below, because it sits immediately beneath the nearer round number handle at $6.40 and therefore separates a contained test from meaningful range deterioration. The other nearer round number handle at $6.60 matters because reclaiming it would show that supply near the one month average is being absorbed, although $6.62 remains the more exact test of whether the pullback is repairing. The three month range of $5.97 to $6.93 defines the larger map because its lower boundary is the last clearly stated downside reference, while its upper boundary is both the month swing high and the decisive ceiling.
The bull path is straightforward: if $6.38 continues to hold, then stabilization above $6.40 can build a recovery toward $6.60; if price then reclaims $6.62 and accepts above it, pressure should shift back toward $6.93 because the market would have recovered its recent center of gravity. A decisive move above $6.93 opens the path toward $7.13, which means the pullback has resolved with the longer trend rather than against it. The bear path is equally clean: if rebounds cannot hold $6.60 and price loses $6.38, then $5.97 is exposed because the shelf has failed and the current range no longer contains the retreat.
The main risk to the constructive view is acceleration through $6.38, especially if any rebound stalls below $6.40, because that would turn nearby support into overhead resistance and make the lower end of the three month range the relevant reference. Conversely, sustained acceptance above $6.62 would invalidate the near-term bearish pressure, while a decisive move through $6.93 would invalidate the pullback thesis itself and confirm renewed expansion toward $7.13. Net, copper remains longer-term constructive but tactically fragile at $6.40 because support is close, downside momentum is still active, and conviction only improves through $6.60 and $6.62; until then, $6.38 is the line separating consolidation from a deeper move toward $5.97.
Key levels: support $6.38 (0.3% below), resistance $6.93 (8.3% above), one-month average $6.62, three-month range $5.97 to $6.93.
