AUD/USD – Daily Read

AUD/USD is attempting to stabilize rather than establish a durable reversal. Last price is 0.6977 after finishing the last session 0.2 percent higher, but the pair is sitting mid-range over the past month and remains below the one month average at 0.6997. That matters because the structure still reads as a downtrend, with price under both its one-month and longer averages, while momentum is roughly 0.8 percent down over the last two weeks. The clear view is cautiously bearish unless the pair can reclaim nearby resistance and hold it.
The macro backdrop matters only insofar as shifting expectations around relative Australian and US conditions can alter demand for AUD/USD, because the current bounce has not yet overcome the currency-specific evidence of persistent overhead pressure. The pair has recovered enough to test the psychologically important 0.7000 area, but it has not repaired the broader structure. The month swing high at 0.7070 sits about 1.3 percent above the current price, which means the market still needs a meaningful extension, not merely another modest positive session, to demonstrate that control has shifted.
The first contest is 0.7000, because regaining and holding that round number would place price back above the one month average of 0.6997 and reduce the immediate pressure from the prevailing decline. Resistance at 0.7070 carries greater weight because it marks the month swing high and the boundary that has contained recent strength. A decisive move above it would open the path toward 0.7241, the upper edge of the three month range 0.6899 to 0.7241. Below, a shelf of support at 0.6899 is about 1.1 percent below, and it matters because it is both the lower edge of that range and the level defending the pair from a deeper extension. Losing it exposes 0.6800, where the round number may slow pressure but would not by itself repair the damage.
The bull path is straightforward: if AUD/USD establishes itself above 0.7000, then the recovery can challenge 0.7070 because price would have reclaimed the one month average and removed the nearest layer of resistance. If 0.7070 then gives way decisively, the path opens toward 0.7241, with the break signaling that the month-long ceiling has failed. The bear path begins if attempts above 0.7000 continue to stall. In that case, the roughly 0.8 percent decline over the last two weeks remains the better guide, and a renewed retreat toward 0.6899 becomes more likely. If 0.6899 is lost, then 0.6800 is exposed because the three month range floor would no longer be defending the pair.
The main risk to the cautious bearish view is sustained acceptance above 0.7070, because that would invalidate the immediate sequence of lower pressure and shift attention toward 0.7241. Conversely, a brief move above 0.6997 or 0.7000 would not be enough if price quickly slips back beneath them, while a break below 0.6899 would strengthen the downtrend case and bring 0.6800 into focus. Net, 0.6977 leaves AUD/USD balanced close to its first decision point, but the burden remains on the upside to prove itself.
Key levels: support 0.6899 (1.1% below), resistance 0.7070 (1.3% above), one-month average 0.6997, three-month range 0.6899 to 0.7241.
