AUD/USD – Daily Read

AUD/USD is caught between fading momentum and still-intact range support, leaving the near-term bias modestly bearish rather than decisively negative. Last price is 0.6984 after the last session finished 0.2 percent lower, and it is sitting mid-range over the past month. That matters because the market is not stretched enough to invite an automatic reversal, while the inability to hold firmer ground suggests rallies still face supply. The clear view is that pressure remains downward until the pair proves it can reclaim the levels that have capped recent attempts to recover.
The wider macro backdrop matters only insofar as shifting expectations around global growth, risk appetite and relative rate support can quickly alter demand for the Australian dollar because it trades as a growth-sensitive currency. Instrument-specific evidence remains softer: the one month average is 0.6997, price is below it, and the structure reads as a downtrend, price under both its one-month and longer averages. The pair is also roughly 0.3 percent down over the last two weeks, which means the recent drift is negative but not yet forceful enough to show outright capitulation.
The first test is the nearer round number handle at 0.7000 because it separates immediate recovery attempts from continued sub-average trade. Sustained acceptance above it would ease near-term pressure, but it would not reverse the broader structure by itself. The more important resistance is the month swing high at 0.7070, about 1.2 percent above the current price. That level matters because it marks the point where recent supply has already proved effective. A decisive move above it would show that sellers no longer control the top of the monthly range and would materially improve the tone.
On the downside, a shelf of support at 0.6899, about 1.2 percent below, is the key defensive line because it is also the floor of the three month range of 0.6899 to 0.7241. Holding that shelf would preserve the argument that AUD/USD remains range-bound despite its downward structure. Losing it would instead confirm that the range floor has failed and expose the nearer round number handle at 0.6800, where attention would shift from consolidation to downside extension.
The bull path is straightforward: if 0.7000 is recovered and defended, then pressure can build toward 0.7070; if a decisive move above 0.7070 follows, then it opens the path toward 0.7241 because the month swing high would have stopped acting as resistance. The bear path is equally clear: if recovery attempts fail beneath 0.7000 and price returns to 0.6899, then losing 0.6899 exposes 0.6800 because the three month floor would no longer be containing weakness.
The main risk to the bearish lean is a rapid improvement in Australian dollar demand that carries price through 0.7070, because that would invalidate the present sequence of lower-quality recoveries and challenge the downtrend. Conversely, repeated defense of 0.6899 would weaken the case for immediate downside continuation even if 0.6997 remains overhead. Net, AUD/USD remains vulnerable below 0.7000 and especially below 0.7070, but the stronger bearish conclusion requires 0.6899 to fail; until then, this is a pressured range rather than a confirmed breakdown.
Key levels: support 0.6899 (1.2% below), resistance 0.7070 (1.2% above), one-month average 0.6997, three-month range 0.6899 to 0.7241.
