AUD/USD – Daily Read

0.6971
AUD/USD is leaning lower, and the burden of proof remains with buyers. Last price 0.6971, 0.2 percent lower on the day. It is trading in the lower half of its one-month range, which matters because rebounds are being absorbed before they can repair the broader structure. The clear view is that rallies should remain vulnerable while price sits beneath the central reference points of the recent range. This is not yet a disorderly selloff, but it is a market showing persistent relative demand for US dollars over Australian dollars.
The macro backdrop explains that pressure. US economic resilience and continued concern about inflation have kept US policy expectations comparatively firm, supporting the dollar through the rates channel. Australian financial conditions remain restrictive, but expectations around further domestic tightening have softened, narrowing the relative support previously available to the Australian dollar. Declines in important commodity prices also matter because the currency remains sensitive to Australia’s terms of trade and Chinese demand. Meanwhile, broadly resilient global risk appetite has limited the downside rather than reversed it. That mix leaves AUD/USD caught between a firm US dollar impulse and enough risk appetite to prevent an immediate capitulation.
The one month average is 0.7033; price is below it, and the structure reads as a downtrend, price under both its one-month and longer averages. Momentum roughly 0.8 percent down over the last two weeks reinforces the message that sellers retain control, although the pace is measured. The nearer round number handle at 0.7000 is the immediate test of whether buyers can regain traction. Holding above it would improve the tone, but the month swing high at 0.7173, about 2.9 percent above the current price, is the level that would actually challenge the bearish structure. Above that, 0.7241 marks the upper edge of the three month range 0.6907 to 0.7241 and represents the next meaningful supply zone.
On the downside, a shelf of support at 0.6907, about 0.9 percent below, is defended by prior demand and by its role as the floor of that broader range. If buyers continue to protect it, AUD/USD can stabilize and rotate back toward 0.7000, with acceptance there creating room for a test of 0.7033. If that recovery gathers breadth, a decisive move above 0.7173 opens the path toward 0.7241. The bear path is equally clear: if rallies fail beneath 0.7000 and selling pressure returns, repeated tests should weaken the lower shelf. Losing 0.6907 exposes 0.6800, where the next round number handle may attract defensive demand.
The main risk to the bearish read is a softer US dollar driven by a dovish shift in US policy expectations, renewed strength in commodities, or a cleaner improvement in global risk appetite. Sustained trade above 0.7033 would warn that downside pressure is fading, while a decisive recovery through 0.7173 would invalidate the current downtrend view. Conversely, worsening risk sentiment or weaker China-linked demand would increase the chance that support fails. Net, AUD/USD remains tactically bearish below 0.7033, with 0.6907 the pivotal line between consolidation and a deeper extension lower.
