USD/JPY – Daily Read

11 September 2026 | Forex | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
$154.48

USD/JPY is consolidating within a broader bearish structure, with the last price at 154.48, 0.0 percent higher on the day. The lack of daily progress matters because it follows sustained selling rather than a convincing reversal. It is trading in the lower half of its one-month range, while momentum is roughly 3.3 percent down over the last two weeks. The clear view is that sellers retain control unless the pair can reclaim important overhead territory. Until then, rebounds should be treated as tests of supply rather than evidence that the decline has ended.

The macro backdrop remains a contest between US rate expectations, Japanese policy expectations, and demand for defensive currencies. USD/JPY is especially sensitive to changes in the relative appeal of US and Japanese yields, while shifts in global risk appetite can amplify the move. Japanese official concern about excessive currency weakness also matters because it can discourage aggressive dollar buying at elevated levels. The one month average is 157.46; price is below it, and the structure reads as a downtrend, price under both its one-month and longer averages. That alignment explains why the burden of proof sits with buyers.

The nearest upside test is the round number handle at 155.00. Holding above it would show that buyers can absorb selling close to the market, but merely trading through it would not repair the wider structure. The month swing high at 160.39, about 3.8 percent above the current price, is the decisive barrier because it marks the point from which the latest downswing developed. A decisive move above 160.39 opens the path toward 163.99. That destination is also the upper boundary of the three month range 152.88 to 163.99, so reaching it would represent a broad recovery rather than a routine bounce.

On the downside, a shelf of support at 152.88, about 1.0 percent below, is the key defence. It has added importance because it is also the floor of the three month range. Buyers need to protect it to preserve the possibility that recent weakness is forming a base. Losing 152.88 exposes 150.00, where the nearer round number handle may attract demand but would not automatically stop the decline. A clean failure there would confirm that sellers have extended control beyond the established range.

The bull path is straightforward: if USD/JPY establishes acceptance above 155.00, then the market can challenge 157.46; if buyers subsequently force a decisive move above 160.39, then 163.99 becomes the logical objective. The bear path remains more immediate: if rebounds fail beneath 157.46 and pressure returns, then 152.88 is likely to be retested; if that shelf breaks decisively, then 150.00 comes into view.

The principal risk is a sharp repricing of relative monetary policy expectations or forceful official rhetoric, either of which could overwhelm nearby levels. The bearish read is invalidated by sustained trade above 160.39, while failure below 152.88 strengthens it. Net, the structure favours further downside, but the proximity of support argues for confirmation before expecting acceleration.
