Nikkei 225 (NKY) – Daily Read

13 October 2026 | Index | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
67,700.3

The Nikkei 225 is correcting within an intact advance, not yet reversing it: the last price is 67,700 after the last session finished 1.9 percent lower, but it is holding in the upper half of its one-month range. That distinction matters because weakness occurring high within a recent range usually reflects position reduction after a strong run rather than immediate structural failure. The clear view is cautiously constructive while the index holds nearby support, with confirmation requiring a recovery through the overhead handles.

The broader macro backdrop matters mainly through shifting expectations for global growth, policy, and currency-sensitive Japanese exporters, which means the Nikkei can react sharply when investors reduce exposure to technology and cyclical shares. Even after the latest retreat, the index is roughly 2.8 percent up over the last two weeks. The one month average is 66,708, price is above it, and the structure reads as a clean uptrend, price above both its one-month and longer averages. This suggests the recent decline is a test of conviction because the underlying advance still has room to absorb short-term profit taking.

The immediate contest sits around 68,000 and 67,000 because these nearer round number handles define whether the latest weakness is being contained or gaining traction. A sustained return above 68,000 would show that demand is reasserting itself and would reduce the significance of the 1.9 percent lower session. Holding 67,000 keeps price close enough to the upper handle for a prompt recovery. Failure to defend 67,000, particularly if price then remains below 66,708, would weaken the clean character of the uptrend and shift attention toward deeper support.

The month swing high is 70,799, about 4.6 percent above the current price, and it matters because it marks the point where previous upward pressure stalled. Beyond it, the three month range is 59,292 to 71,399, which means the upper boundary is close enough to become relevant once the month high gives way. On the downside, a shelf of support at 62,726, about 7.3 percent below, is the major structural defense. It should attract attention because it separates an ordinary pullback from a much broader range retracement.

The bull path is straightforward: if 67,000 holds, 68,000 is reclaimed, and price builds acceptance above it, then pressure can rotate back toward 70,799. A decisive move above 70,799 opens the path toward 71,399 because that would clear the month swing high and leave the upper edge of the three month range as the next visible obstacle. The bear path begins if 67,000 fails and 66,708 cannot be recovered. In that case, the correction can deepen toward 62,726, and losing 62,726 exposes 59,292 because the principal shelf would no longer protect the lower part of the broader range.

The main risk to the constructive read is persistent weakness below 66,708, while outright invalidation comes from losing 62,726 because that would replace higher-range consolidation with a materially weaker structure. Conversely, a move through 70,799 that quickly falls back below 68,000 would warn of rejection rather than continuation. Net, 67,700 still supports a constructive bias, but the index must defend 67,000 and regain 68,000 before the route toward 71,399 becomes credible.
