Nikkei 225 (NKY) – Daily Read

6 October 2026 | Index | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
70,510.4

The Nikkei 225 is challenging the upper edge of its recent range, and the immediate bias is higher, but this is now a test of conviction rather than an easy continuation trade. Last price 70,510, 0.8 percent higher on the day. It is pressing the top of its one-month range after a strong recovery, so the next move should reveal whether buyers can turn regained ground into a sustained breakout or whether crowded positioning near resistance produces a sharp rejection.

The broader macro backdrop matters because an index at the boundary of a range needs fresh sponsorship. Expectations around global growth, monetary policy, currency direction, and overseas risk appetite can either reinforce demand for Japanese equities or expose the move to profit-taking. For this instrument specifically, the important feature is the speed and location of the advance. Momentum roughly 8.4 percent up over the last two weeks. That pace demonstrates committed buying, but it also raises the hurdle for further gains because late buyers now need confirmation. One month average 65,841; price is above it, and the structure reads as a recovery attempt, back above the one-month average but still under the longer one. That combination supports the rebound while warning that the larger repair is not yet complete.

The immediate battle is around the month swing high 70,551, about 0.1 percent above the current price. Sellers can defend that level because it marks the point where the latest advance meets prior supply. A decisive move above 70,551 opens the path toward 72,500, with acceptance above the former ceiling showing that buyers are willing to transact at new range highs. The nearer round number handles at 72,500 and 70,000 should frame short-term behavior. Holding 70,000 would preserve breakout pressure and keep dips shallow, while sustained trade below it would suggest that the attack on the high has lost urgency.

Below, a shelf of support at 62,726, about 11.0 percent below, is the more consequential defense. It represents the area where the recovery thesis would face a genuine structural test, rather than ordinary noise around the highs. The three month range 60,449 to 70,551 defines the larger battlefield. Losing 62,726 exposes 60,449, and a move toward that lower boundary would recast the advance as a failed recovery rather than a durable change in control.

The bull path is straightforward: if 70,000 holds and buyers secure a decisive move above 70,551, then supply at the range ceiling has been absorbed and the market can press toward 72,500. The bear path begins if the index fails repeatedly at 70,551 and then loses 70,000. That would invite profit-taking and a deeper retracement, with risk becoming materially more defensive if 62,726 gives way, because 60,449 would then be exposed.

The principal risk to the bullish view is a macro shock that weakens global equity demand or disrupts the domestic support behind the rally. The read is invalidated by a sustained failure below 62,726. Net, buyers retain control near term, but confirmation above 70,551 is required before treating this as more than a forceful recovery attempt.
