EUR/GBP – Daily Read

EUR/GBP is attempting a modest rebound at 0.8484, 0.1 percent higher on the day, but the broader message remains euro weakness rather than a durable turn. It is trading in the lower half of its one-month range, and the structure reads as a downtrend, price under both its one-month and longer averages. The clear view is that rallies remain vulnerable until the cross proves it can reclaim lost ground. That matters because the market is close enough to major support for a routine continuation lower to become a more consequential breakdown.

The macro backdrop favours sterling at the margin. French fiscal concerns are weighing on the euro and unsettling regional bond markets, while expectations that UK monetary policy may remain tighter are supporting the pound. That relative policy story is the direct driver for this cross, even as elevated UK borrowing costs and uncertainty around the coming British fiscal programme prevent an entirely clean sterling view. The latest bounce therefore looks more like positioning relief near support than evidence that the euro has regained control. Momentum roughly 1.4 percent down over the last two weeks reinforces that distinction.

The one month average 0.8549 is the first meaningful recovery test. Price is below it, so sellers still have a favourable reference point from which to defend rallies. A sustained recovery through that area would weaken the immediate bearish structure and bring the nearer round number handle at 0.8600 into play. Above there, the month swing high 0.8612, about 1.5 percent above the current price, is the decisive ceiling. It is also the upper boundary of the three month range 0.8447 to 0.8612, so clearing it would signal more than a temporary bounce.

On the downside, a shelf of support at 0.8447, about 0.4 percent below, is doing important work. Buyers are defending the bottom of the established range, while sellers have yet to prove that recent euro pressure can force a clean extension. Losing that shelf would expose the nearer round number handle at 0.8400, where the market would test whether demand exists below the recent range rather than merely at its edge.

The bull path is straightforward: if 0.8447 continues to hold and price retakes 0.8549, then pressure can build toward 0.8600 and 0.8612. A decisive move above 0.8612 opens the path toward 0.8800 because it would break the range ceiling and force a reassessment of the prevailing sterling advantage. The bear path is equally clear: if rebounds fail beneath 0.8549 and losing 0.8447 exposes 0.8400, then range support has become failed support and downside pressure should accelerate.

The main risk to the bearish read is a reversal in relative policy expectations or an easing of euro-area fiscal anxiety, particularly if UK fiscal concerns begin to dominate sterling pricing. The read is invalidated by acceptance above 0.8612. Until then, the net take remains bearish EUR/GBP, with the current bounce treated as corrective while 0.8447 is the immediate decision point.
