Copper – Daily Read
8 October 2026 | Commodity | Titan Macro Desk
$6.72
Copper is pressing higher, but the important message is control rather than acceleration. Last price $6.72, 1.3 percent higher on the day. It is holding in the upper half of its one-month range, showing that buyers are retaining ground rather than merely producing a short-lived bounce. The clean view is constructive: copper remains an asset to buy on contained weakness while support holds, although the market still needs a fresh demand signal to turn strength into a breakout.
The macro backdrop is a contest between resilient structural demand and tighter financial conditions. Copper continues to benefit from electrification, grid investment, data-centre construction and the difficulty of expanding mine supply quickly. Against that, a firm dollar, elevated borrowing costs and uncertainty over Chinese industrial consumption can restrain demand for the broader base-metals complex. China’s return from its holiday period makes the physical response especially important. Renewed purchasing would validate the advance, while rising available supply and cautious downstream buying would encourage profit-taking. The instrument-specific picture currently leans positive because price is advancing despite those cross-currents, but confirmation must come through sustained physical interest.
The one month average $6.63 matters because price is above it, and the structure reads as a clean uptrend, price above both its one-month and longer averages. That area should attract buyers looking to participate without chasing. Momentum roughly 0.1 percent up over the last two weeks shows progress has been measured, leaving room for expansion but also warning that conviction is not yet forceful. The nearer round number handles at $6.80 and $6.60 frame the immediate contest. Holding above the lower handle preserves orderly consolidation, while acceptance above the upper handle would show buyers can carry price toward the range ceiling. The month swing high $6.93, about 3.1 percent above the current price, is the decisive overhead test because it marks where supply previously overcame demand. A shelf of support at $6.40, about 4.8 percent below, is the deeper line buyers must defend to keep the broader advance intact. The three month range $6.02 to $6.93 defines the full battlefield and makes either boundary consequential.
The bull path is straightforward: if copper absorbs selling around $6.80, holds pullbacks above $6.60 and attracts stronger post-holiday demand, then a decisive move above $6.93 opens the path toward $7.00. Such a break would indicate that prior supply has been cleared and could draw in buyers waiting for confirmation. The bear path begins if $6.60 fails and rebounds cannot reclaim it. That would shift attention to $6.40. Losing $6.40 exposes $6.02, because the failed shelf would signal that the recent uptrend has given way to a broader range retracement.
The main risks are a stronger dollar, renewed pressure from financing conditions, weak Chinese buying or an unexpected improvement in nearby supply. The bullish read is invalidated by sustained trade below $6.40, not by ordinary movement between the nearby handles. Net, copper retains an upward bias, but the best evidence will be acceptance above resistance rather than another brief test of it.
