S&P 500 (SPX) – Daily Read

The S&P 500 is in a controlled pullback, not a confirmed trend reversal. At a last price of 7,659 after finishing the last session 1.1 percent lower, the index is sitting mid-range over the past month, which means neither side has established decisive control. The near-term bias is cautious because price has slipped beneath an important reference area and recent pressure remains negative, but the longer trend still points up. The clear view is that weakness remains corrective while support holds, although the index now needs to reclaim nearby resistance before confidence can rebuild.

The immediate catalyst is the index losing traction beneath the one month average of 7,739, because that level separates a routine pause from a deeper deterioration in near-term structure. Price is below it, and the structure reads as a pullback, slipping under the one-month average while the longer trend still points up. The index is roughly 0.8 percent down over the last two weeks, which means pressure has persisted beyond a single weak session without yet becoming disorderly. The macro backdrop matters mainly because shifting confidence around rates, growth, and corporate earnings can amplify moves in a broad index when participation is already hesitant.

The first resistance zone is the nearer round number handle at 7,750, because it sits just above the one month average and therefore represents the quickest test of whether the retreat is stabilizing. Above that, the month swing high at 7,845, about 2.4 percent above the current price, is the decisive ceiling because it marks the upper edge of both the monthly and broader range. On the downside, a shelf of support at 7,508, about 2.0 percent below, matters because it is reinforced by the nearer round number handle at 7,500. The three month range of 7,257 to 7,845 defines the larger battlefield, which means moves beyond either boundary would carry greater directional significance.

The bull path is straightforward: if 7,750 is reclaimed and then defended, the index can retest 7,845 because recovering both nearby resistance and the one month average would show that recent weakness has been absorbed. If a decisive move above 7,845 follows, then it opens the path toward 8,000, with the range ceiling becoming support rather than an obstacle. The bear path begins if rebounds repeatedly fail beneath 7,750. If 7,508 then gives way, losing 7,508 exposes 7,257 because the support shelf would no longer contain the pullback, leaving the lower boundary of the three month range as the next meaningful reference.

The main risk to the constructive longer-term view is sustained acceptance below 7,508, because that would shift the move from an orderly retreat toward a broader range breakdown. A recovery above 7,750 that cannot hold would also weaken the bull case, while firm acceptance above 7,845 would invalidate the near-term cautious stance. Net, the S&P 500 remains tactically vulnerable but structurally resilient: support at 7,508 keeps the pullback contained, while only a decisive clearance of 7,845 restores clear upside control.
