AUD/USD – Daily Read

AUD/USD is attempting a tactical rebound, with the last price 0.6983, 0.3 percent higher on the day, but the broader structure remains vulnerable. The pair is trading in the lower half of its one-month range, momentum is still negative, and price has yet to reclaim the area that would signal a genuine change in control. The clear view is that this bounce matters only if it develops into sustained acceptance above nearby resistance. Until then, sellers retain the structural advantage even as short-term pressure eases.
The macro backdrop is a contest between global risk appetite and relative monetary expectations. The Australian dollar generally benefits when confidence in global growth, commodity demand, and the regional outlook improves, while the US dollar tends to gain when investors favor liquidity, resilience, or tighter financial conditions. That makes AUD/USD particularly sensitive to shifts in expectations around China, commodities, and the direction of US policy. Instrument-specific evidence remains cautious: momentum is roughly 0.5 percent down over the last two weeks, while the one month average 0.7018 sits above spot. Price is below it, and the structure reads as a downtrend, price under both its one-month and longer averages. The current advance therefore looks corrective unless buyers can establish control beyond that overhead zone.
The first test is the nearer round number handle at 0.7000. It matters because a market holding above it would begin to repair sentiment and challenge the one month average 0.7018, where sellers defending the prevailing trend should be most active. Above that area, the month swing high 0.7144, about 2.3 percent above the current price, is the decisive structural barrier. A shelf of support at 0.6907, about 1.1 percent below, is equally important because it marks the floor of the three month range 0.6907 to 0.7241. Buyers must defend that shelf to preserve any credible recovery case. Beneath it, the nearer round number handle at 0.6800 becomes the market’s natural downside reference.
The bull path is straightforward: if the pair absorbs selling around 0.7000, reclaims the one month average 0.7018, and holds above it, then the rebound can broaden toward 0.7144. A decisive move above 0.7144 opens the path toward 0.7241, turning the existing range ceiling into the next test of demand. The bear path begins if rallies fail beneath the average and sellers force price back toward 0.6907. If that support gives way, then losing 0.6907 exposes 0.6800, confirming that the downtrend has resumed and that the prior range floor no longer protects the market.
The main risk to the bearish structure is a durable recovery above 0.7144, especially if improving global risk appetite weakens demand for the US dollar and strengthens the Australian dollar’s growth sensitivity. Conversely, repeated failure around 0.7000 would invalidate the immediate recovery attempt, while a loss of 0.6907 would invalidate the broader stabilization thesis. Net, the pair is bouncing, but it has not yet earned a bullish reading. Respect the recovery attempt, though keep the structural bias bearish until price clears and holds the key overhead levels.
