Nikkei 225 (NKY) – Daily Read

9 October 2026 | Index | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
69,004.5

The Nikkei 225 is correcting inside an intact advance, not yet reversing it. Last price 69,005, 1.5 percent lower on the day, shows meaningful selling pressure, but the index is holding in the upper half of its one-month range. That distinction matters. The decline is testing conviction near the highs while the broader structure still favors buyers. The clear view is constructive above nearby support, although the market now needs to reclaim the round number overhead to prevent a routine pullback from becoming a deeper reset.

The macro backdrop is a contest between global risk appetite, the path of interest rates, currency sensitivity, and confidence in Japanese corporate earnings. For this index, moves in the yen can quickly alter the outlook for exporters, while shifts in global technology and cyclical shares can amplify index direction. Domestic policy expectations also matter because they influence financial conditions and valuation tolerance. Against that backdrop, performance remains roughly 4.0 percent up over the last two weeks. The one month average is 66,776; price is above it, and the structure reads as a clean uptrend, price above both its one-month and longer averages. Buyers therefore retain control of the broader trend despite the latest decline.

The immediate battle is around the nearer round number handles at 70,000 and 69,000. The 69,000 area matters because the market is sitting almost directly on it. Holding there would show that buyers are willing to defend the first obvious reference point after the selloff. A recovery through 70,000 would improve confidence that supply near the highs is being absorbed. Failure to hold 69,000 would not by itself overturn the broader advance, but it would weaken the near-term tone and encourage a move back toward the one month average at 66,776.

The month swing high is 70,799, about 2.6 percent above the current price. It is also the upper boundary of the three month range 60,449 to 70,799, so it represents more than a recent peak. Sellers defending it are protecting the established range. A decisive move above 70,799 opens the path toward 71,000, because the market would have cleared the main visible supply zone and confirmed renewed price discovery. Below, a shelf of support at 62,726, about 9.1 percent below, is the major structural defense. It marks the area where buyers must reassert control if a broader retracement develops. Losing 62,726 exposes 60,449 and would materially damage the uptrend.

The bull path is straightforward: if 69,000 holds and price reclaims 70,000, then another test of 70,799 becomes likely; if that ceiling breaks decisively, then 71,000 becomes the next objective. The bear path begins if 69,000 fails and rebounds cannot recover it. That would shift attention toward 66,776, and sustained weakness there would raise the probability of a deeper move into 62,726. If 62,726 then gives way, the range floor at 60,449 comes into play.

The principal risk to the constructive read is that the latest decline signals distribution rather than consolidation, especially if currency or global risk conditions turn sharply against Japanese equities. The read is invalidated by a loss of 62,726. Net, the index remains in a clean uptrend, but buyers need to defend 69,000 and reclaim 70,000 before the advance can credibly challenge 70,799 again.
