US Dollar Index (DXY) – Daily Read

$99.21
The US Dollar Index is firming, but the move is a tactical rebound rather than a confirmed trend reversal. Last price 99.21, 0.1 percent higher on the day. Hotter European inflation has supported the dollar through pressure on the euro and sterling, yet the broader macro regime remains balanced ahead of the weekend. The clear view is that sellers still retain structural control below the upper boundary of the recent swing, while nearby support keeps the index from becoming an easy short at current levels.
European inflation prints came in hotter than expected in France and Spain, lifting near term rate expectations but producing a mixed market response. EURUSD and GBPUSD both fell over half a percent as the dollar gained ground, showing that positioning and relative policy expectations mattered more than a simple rates reaction. Japanese labour data held steady while Tokyo CPI showed modest upside, keeping the BoJ policy path intact and limiting the yen side of the dollar story. For DXY, that leaves European currency weakness as the immediate catalyst, not a decisive change in the global policy regime. It is sitting mid-range over the past month, which fits a market absorbing cross-currents rather than beginning a clean directional expansion.
The one month average 99.40 is the first meaningful test because price is below it, and the structure reads as a downtrend, price under both its one-month and longer averages. Price has moved roughly 0.4 percent down over the last two weeks, so a recovery through that reference would show that recent selling pressure is losing control. The month swing high 100.08, about 0.9 percent above the current price, is the more important ceiling. The nearer round number handle at 100.00 can attract selling and profit taking before that high is challenged. A decisive move above 100.08 opens the path toward 101.64, the upper boundary of the three month range 97.95 to 101.64.
Below, a shelf of support at 98.56, about 0.7 percent below, is where buyers must defend the current rebound thesis. Holding it would preserve the recent range and keep pressure on shorts to cover into strength. Losing 98.56 exposes 97.95, with the nearer round number handle at 98.00 likely to act as a final area of hesitation. A sustained move through that zone would turn an orderly range into renewed downside continuation.
The bull path is straightforward: if DXY reclaims 99.40, clears 100.00, and then secures a decisive move above 100.08, the structure improves and buyers can press toward 101.64. The bear path is equally clear: if the European catalyst fades, price fails beneath 99.40, and sellers force a loss of 98.56, then 98.00 comes into play before 97.95.
The main risk is weekend positioning exaggerating moves that lack follow-through. A firm break above 100.08 would invalidate the structurally cautious stance, while a loss of 98.56 would invalidate the rebound case. Net, the dollar has near term support from Europe, but below 99.40 and 100.08 the stronger interpretation remains consolidation within a broader downtrend.
