The values screen, explained · five checks, plain English

Does not pass. Prohibited keyword in sector/industry: bank

  • Business activity Prohibited keyword in sector/industry: bank Fail
  • Debt load Interest-bearing debt is of its assets, above the one-third ceiling the screen allows. Fail
  • Interest-bearing cash Interest-bearing cash and securities are of assets, above the one-third limit. Fail
  • Receivables Money owed to the company is of assets, above the 49% limit. Fail
  • Revenue purity of revenue comes from non-compliant sources, over the 5% line. Fail

Every security is read against two recognised standards: our stricter asset-based screen (ratios measured against total assets) and the more widely used market-value standard (measured against market capitalisation). Where they agree we say so plainly; where they part ways — almost always on the debt check — we show both readings and mark it, because that disagreement is the finding, not a fault. We report the score; you and your scholar make the call.

The business, in plain words · what the numbers mean

Colombian Banking Looks Cheap Until Ethics Bite

Picture a shop owner in Medellín needing working capital or a family sending money home from abroad. The cash moves through local banks such as Grupo Cibest that handle deposits, loans and transfers across Colombia and beyond. Those everyday flows generate steady revenue growth of 11 percent and a 17 percent return on equity.

We pass on this name outright. The ethical screen flags the entire banking sector as off limits, so the forward multiple of 8.2 times earnings, 15 percent profit margin and slim margin of safety above current prices never come into play. Analyst consensus already sits at hold with a lower median target, and we see no reason to override the screen.

Emerging-market currency swings and credit cycles remain real threats even when multiples look modest. Peak earnings in regional banking often coincide with the lowest multiples, turning apparent value into a trap once conditions turn. Analysis, not advice.
