FTSE 100 (UKX) – Daily Read

6 October 2026 | Index | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
10,497.9

The FTSE 100 is losing altitude rather than suffering a disorderly break. Last price 10,498, 0.2 percent lower on the day, leaves the index in the lower half of its one-month range and confirms that sellers still control the prevailing structure. Momentum roughly 1.7 percent down over the last two weeks reinforces that view. The immediate bias is therefore bearish, but nearby support means this is not yet a clean acceleration lower. That distinction matters because the next directional move should reveal whether current weakness is consolidation within a broad range or the start of a deeper repricing.

The macro backdrop is one in which equity investors remain sensitive to changes in growth expectations, interest-rate assumptions, currencies, and commodity conditions. Those forces matter particularly for the FTSE 100 because its large multinational, financial, energy, mining, and defensive constituents respond differently to shifts in global demand and sterling. The instrument-specific problem is currently positional: the one month average 10,643; price is below it, and the structure reads as a downtrend, price under both its one-month and longer averages. Until that relationship changes, rebounds are more likely to meet supply than develop immediately into durable advances.

The nearer round number handles at 10,500 and 10,250 frame the short-term contest. Trading around 10,500 makes it an immediate sentiment pivot. Recovery above it would improve tone, but would not by itself repair the broader structure. A shelf of support at 10,391, about 1.0 percent below, is more consequential because buyers have previously defended that area and because it marks the bottom of the three month range 10,391 to 10,990. Holding it would preserve the range and encourage a rebound attempt. Losing it would show that established demand has failed, leaving 10,250 as the next natural area where buyers may regroup.

On the upside, the one month average 10,643 is the first meaningful test of whether buyers can absorb overhead supply. Beyond it, the month swing high 10,823, about 3.1 percent above the current price, is the decisive barrier. That level represents the point where a rebound becomes a credible structural reversal. A decisive move above 10,823 opens the path toward 10,990, the upper edge of the broader range, as trapped sellers cover and momentum improves.

The bull path is straightforward: if 10,391 holds, then acceptance back above 10,500 can carry the index toward 10,643; if buyers then clear 10,823 decisively, the market can extend toward 10,990. The bear path is equally clear: if rebounds fail beneath 10,643 and selling resumes, then pressure returns to 10,391; losing 10,391 exposes 10,250.

The main risk to the bearish read is a forceful recovery through 10,643 followed by sustained trade above 10,823, which would invalidate the idea that rallies remain opportunities for sellers. Conversely, repeated failure around 10,500 would increase the probability of another support test. Net, the FTSE 100 remains defensively positioned and tactically bearish, but 10,391 is the line separating contained weakness from a more damaging breakdown.
