The Business, in Plain Words

Logistics Broker Stuck With High Price Tag

Every time a pallet moves from a Midwest factory to a California warehouse, someone has to match the truck, the paperwork and the payment. Landstar sits in that middle seat, yet the business is barely growing. Revenue rose just 2 percent last year while the shares trade at 28.4 times forward earnings, well above our fair value of 173 dollars against a current price of 211 dollars.

We pass because the numbers do not justify the premium. Profit margins sit at only 3 percent, return on equity is a middling 14 percent and fifteen analysts already call the stock a hold with a median target below the current level. An unknown moat and single-digit growth leave little room for error when investors are paying for expansion that is not showing up.

The freight market is cyclical by nature, so today's modest earnings could easily mark a peak rather than a floor. Currency moves, fuel spikes and shipper pullbacks can compress volumes fast. Ethical screen cleared, but the valuation leaves no margin for those swings.
