The Business, in Plain Words

Heart patches track rhythms but price outruns value

Imagine strapping on a small patch that records every heartbeat for up to two weeks, then spotting dangerous skips before they turn serious. iRhythm built that service around its Zio device and revenue is still climbing 26 percent. Yet the company posts a negative 4 percent profit margin and minus 22 percent return on equity, so growth has not reached the bottom line.

At 104 times forward earnings the shares trade above our fair value with an 8 percent negative margin of safety. Strong analyst targets sit far higher, but our screen finds no opportunity once the multiple and missing profits are weighed together. The medical-device story is clear, the economics are not.

High multiples leave scant room for the usual slips in regulatory approvals or reimbursement changes. Until margins turn consistently positive the valuation rests on hope rather than delivered returns. Analysis, not advice.
