Alphabet reports Wednesday 28 October: what past reactions say about the move after

Pre-London · Alphabet Digestion · Friday · 02:30 New York / 07:30 London / 15:30 Tokyo

The one-breath open: Alphabet reports Wednesday 28 October and the desk block carries no consensus for that print, so the map is price alone: Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) sits 28958.69, down 2.9 from 29822.52, Alphabet (GOOGL) already off 3.15 to 324.22, VIX rebid to 19.03 from 16.68, and Meta (META) gave 6.98 while breadth refused the same wash. The Pre-London question is whether that growth fracture already prices a contained Alphabet week five sessions out, or whether 19-handle vol and the sold platform book leave the reaction window wide open into the 28 October catalyst.

Tape Recap

Cap-weighted cracked; Dow and Russell refused the wash

New York left London a selective growth break, not a full liquidation. NAS100 last 28958.69 against 29822.52 prior close, a 2.9 decline straight through the 29500 handle. S&P 500 (US500) finished 7663.43, off 1.21 from 7757.17. Dow Jones (US30) barely moved at 52867.98, up 0.02 from 52856.09. Russell 2000 (US2000) printed 2784.03, up 0.11 from 2781.02. Consequence into the London open: if the growth names fail to stabilise first, the equal-weight defence becomes the only bid left standing.

Single names cut the same way. META closed 648.85, down 6.98 from 697.52. Nvidia (NVDA) gave 4.4 to 212.21. Amazon (AMZN) fell 4.57 to 250.38. GOOGL dropped 3.15 to 324.22. Broadcom (AVGO) off 4.31 to 323.24. Tesla (TSLA) off 3.08 to 374.58. Microsoft (MSFT) off 2.23 to 521.08. Apple (AAPL) alone printed green at 348.22, up 1.23 from 343.99. A book that sold META, NVDA, AMZN, GOOGL and AVGO together while AAPL held is concentrated de-risk. Any bounce that leaves META, NVDA and GOOGL lagging is unfinished business into next week.

Europe offered on the overnight marks; Far East split. FTSE 100 (UK100) last 10725.0, off 0.26 from 10752.9. DAX 40 (GER40) last 25371.75, off 1.07 from 25645.04. CAC 40 (FRA40) last 7811.26, off 1.39 from 7921.68. Nikkei 225 (JP225) last 62459.19, off 0.71 from 62907.84. Hang Seng (HK50) last 23100.8, up 0.72 from 22934.68. Crude Oil WTI (CL) last 100.56, up 1.1 from 99.47. Brent (BZ) bid 0.89 to 114.18. Gold (XAU/USD) last 4036.8, off 0.58 from 4060.4. Silver (XAG/USD) last 54.46, off 0.56. Bitcoin (BTC) last 81678.76, off 2.78 from 84011.97. US Dollar Index (DXY) last 101.69, up 0.08. EUR/USD at 1.1215, off 0.18. GBP/USD at 1.3391, off 0.04. USD/JPY last 156.9, off 0.78 from 158.13.

VIX last 19.03 against 16.68, a 14.09 lift, clear of the five-session average of 17.7. Fear and greed sits at 19.8, labelled neutral, unchanged on the day. Realised vol expanded hard into the US close. That is the handoff London inherits: growth broke, breadth held, vol rebid through 19, and a five-session Alphabet catalyst now sits against a damaged platform book.

What We Called vs What Happened

Score the Pre-Asia map into the London handoff

Pre-Asia framed invalidation as “NAS100 losing the 28500 area with VIX holding above 19.03.” VIX finished 19.03 and sits on that print, but NAS100 remains 28958.69, so that leg is pending rather than confirmed: part-right on vol, not yet triggered on price. It also said evidence for stabilisation was “US30 flat, US2000 up 0.11, AAPL up 1.23, JP225 up 0.85.” US30, US2000 and AAPL marks are intact, but JP225 now prints 62459.19 off 0.71, so that leg is part-right only. Cover that arrives solely in growth names and leaves breadth behind keeps the repair thesis alive for one more session.

Session Setup

London opens against a broken growth bid and a held breadth line

Regime read is neutral, same as yesterday, but the internal mix flipped. NAS100 did the damage. US2000 and US30 refused to follow, so the engine was concentrated de-risk rather than full risk-off. Against that, CL has rebounded to 100.56 after earlier pressure, XAU/USD gave 0.58, META is 6.98 lower, GOOGL is 3.15 lower, and VIX sits 19.03 above the 17.7 five-session mean. DXY last 101.69. The trade into London and New York is whether the equal-weight hold and the AAPL bid stabilise the book, or whether META, NVDA, GOOGL and AMZN residuals force another leg lower through the next round number on NAS100.

Positioning inference, using the fear-greed gauge at 19.8 (labelled neutral) and the VIX lift to 19.03 as the proxy rather than a flow tape, is that crowded growth cover arrived in size on the US close. Historically, similar one-day VIX jumps above the five-session average paired with a sentiment gauge under 20 and cap-weighted lagging equal-weight have produced multi-session digestion when metals keep selling; they have stabilised only when VIX fails to defend the new high and breadth keeps bid. Thesis for Pre-London: does the 2.9 NAS100 break leave desks too light into next week’s known catalysts, or does vol at 19.03 plus META and GOOGL slides force further de-risk? Evidence for stabilisation is US30 flat, US2000 up 0.11, AAPL up 1.23, CL up 1.1, HK50 up 0.72. Evidence against is NAS100 down 2.9, META down 6.98, NVDA down 4.4, GOOGL down 3.15, AMZN down 4.57, VIX at 19.03, JP225 down 0.71. Invalidation of any repair bid is NAS100 losing the 28500 area with VIX above 19.03.

Alphabet Catalyst Into 28 October

What past reaction patterns say about the move after

The publish headline asks what past reactions say about the move after Alphabet reports Wednesday 28 October. The desk block carries no estimate, no consensus, and no price history for that name beyond the fresh mark, so say it plainly: any number you hear elsewhere is not in this data. What the block does carry is the path the book just marked five sessions out: VIX at 19.03, above the 17.7 five-session average after a 14.09 lift from 16.68; fear-greed at 19.8 and labelled neutral; NAS100 down 2.9 on the US close to 28958.69; US500 down 1.21; US30 flat; US2000 up 0.11; GOOGL already down 3.15 to 324.22; META down 6.98; NVDA down 4.4; AMZN down 4.57; CL rebound to 100.56; XAU/USD off 0.58 to 4036.8. That combination is the evidence.

Historically, when realised vol expands through 19, the sentiment gauge sits under 20, and growth leads the decline while equal-weight and the Dow hold, platform names a few sessions out often meet a US book that has already started to re-price the obvious growth premium. The counter-evidence is real: US30 held a 0.02 lift, US2000 printed a 0.11 gain, AAPL alone advanced 1.23, CL rebounded 1.1, and HK50 closed up 0.72. Thesis: the US tape is only partly priced for a contained Alphabet week, because the growth fracture did the heavy lifting on the close while breadth and the industrial book did not join. What would confirm a calm route into 28 October is NAS100 holding above 28500 through Friday and early next week with VIX capped under 19.03 and the gauge holding above 19.8. What would invalidate a calm route is VIX defending above 19.03, NAS100 losing 28500, or GOOGL accelerating under 324.22 into the back half of the week.

Until one of those routes marks, treat 28 October as a known catalyst with unknown magnitude, size off the hinges above, and do not invent a consensus the block refuses to supply. The desk does nothing tactical on the Alphabet name itself before next week: it watches NAS100 28500 and 29200, VIX 19.03, and GOOGL 324.22 as the live tells, plus residual META, NVDA and AMZN reactions as the near-term stress test of the same growth bid the Alphabet release will inherit. Equal-weight outperformance on a day cap-weighted fell is the cleanest tell that the fracture was concentrated; if that spread reverses while vol stays bid, the 28 October reaction window widens fast.

Key Levels

Hinges that decide London through New York

Instrument Level Pre-London setup
Nasdaq 100 (NAS100) 28958.69 last / 29822.52 prev close Lost 29500 on a 2.9 decline; fail to stabilise above 28500 into London and the growth break extends through the US open.
VIX 19.03 last / 16.68 prev close Rebid sits above the 17.7 five-session mean; defending above 19.03 strips any repair narrative and forces lighter size.
Alphabet (GOOGL) 324.22 last / 334.76 prev close Off 3.15; another leg lower into the five-session catalyst widens the 28 October reaction window and drags the platform peers.
Meta (META) 648.85 last / 697.52 prev close Off 6.98; residual selling here keeps pressure on the entire growth book into London cash.
Russell 2000 (US2000) 2784.03 last / 2781.02 prev close Held a 0.11 lift while NAS100 broke; lose that bid and the equal-weight defence collapses into the New York open.
Crude Oil WTI (CL) 100.56 last / 99.47 prev close Rebounded 1.1; lose 100 and energy equities plus related cyclicals give back the overnight repair.
Economic Calendar

Light sheet into the Friday London open

The calendar is light: no verified economic events sit on the sheet for today, and no holidays sit today or tomorrow. Same-week earnings already printed on Thursday 22 October included P&G, Roche, Nestle, L’Oreal, Union Pacific, Hermes, Blackstone, Lockheed Martin, Western Digital, Valero, Spotify and Newmont. Live tells into London and New York remain residual price discovery on whether NAS100 stabilises above 28500 after the growth fracture, residual GOOGL, META, NVDA and AMZN reactions after the prior cluster, and whether CL defends the 100.56 rebound.

Ethical Lens

Platform concentration and the values read

A session where GOOGL, META, NVDA and AMZN all sold hard while AAPL alone advanced concentrates the values question on how much of the growth premium sits in a handful of platform names. For the values-conscious book, that is a reminder to size exposure to advertising, cloud and AI infrastructure against governance and data-use standards rather than chase a bounce that leaves the worst-hit names lagging into the 28 October Alphabet print. Prefer equal-weight and industrial exposure while the fracture digests.

Scenarios & Bias

Four routes from the London open

Scenario Likelihood What it looks like
Bull repair Alternate NAS100 reclaims toward 29200, VIX fades under 19.03, GOOGL and META stop making fresh lows, US2000 keeps the 0.11 bid, AAPL extends the 1.23 lift.
Sideways digestion Base case NAS100 chops 28500 to 29200, VIX oscillates around 19, breadth stays firmer than cap-weight, CL defends 100.56, no fresh catalyst until next week.
Correction extension Alternate NAS100 loses 28500, VIX defends above 19.03, GOOGL breaks 324.22, META and NVDA residual selling resumes, US2000 loses the 2784 bid.
Black swan Tail Gap lower through 28500 with VIX spiking well clear of 19.03, simultaneous break in US30 and US2000, BTC accelerating under 81678.76, forced de-risk across the board.

Risk for the Pre-London sits at ELEVATED: VIX at 19.03 after a 14.09 lift, NAS100 down 2.9, GOOGL already off 3.15 into a five-session catalyst, META off 6.98, and the fear-greed gauge at 19.8. Size REDUCED into the London open; only step back toward STANDARD if NAS100 defends 28500 and VIX fails to hold 19.03. AVOID adding fresh growth exposure while GOOGL, META and NVDA are still making lower prints.

By Experience Level

How to sit this Friday open

Beginner: Watch NAS100 28500 and VIX 19.03 only. If either breaks the wrong way, step aside and wait for the Monday map rather than chase a Friday bounce in sold growth names.

Intermediate: Fade strength that leaves GOOGL, META and NVDA lagging; treat US2000 and US30 outperformance as the cleaner tell. Size REDUCED until VIX loses 19.03 on a closing basis.

Advanced: Trade the spread between cap-weight and equal-weight into London. A narrowing of that gap while VIX stays bid is the signal that the fracture is broadening beyond the platform names into the 28 October window.

Bias

Bias in one sentence: Mildly bearish on NAS100 growth into London while VIX defends 19.03 and GOOGL sits unfinished at 324.22, with a neutral lean on breadth so long as US2000 and US30 refuse to follow.
