The Business, in Plain Words

Retirement savings firm trips ethical screen

Every month millions of Americans funnel pay cheques into retirement accounts and insurance wrappers. Equitable Holdings sits in the middle of that flow yet lands on our excluded list because asset management is off limits. The numbers do little to change the call. Revenue is already falling 8 percent, margins sit at minus 7 percent and return on equity is negative 14 percent despite a wafer-thin 5.5 times forward earnings multiple.

We therefore pass. A 39 percent gap between the 48.99 share price and our 68 fair value means nothing when the business sits in a banned sector. Even the bullish analyst crowd with its 60 median target cannot override the screen.

Cyclical swings in markets could lift reported profits for a while, yet the ethical bar remains fixed. Analysis, not advice.
