USD/JPY – Daily Read

$158.35
USD/JPY is testing the upper edge of its recent range, but the move is not yet a clean upside escape. Last price is 158.35 after finishing the last session 0.2 percent lower, which means near-term conviction has softened even as the broader recovery remains intact. It is pressing the top of its one-month range, so the central question is whether dollar strength can absorb overhead supply or whether stretched positioning gives the yen room to recover. The view stays cautiously constructive above nearby support, because price is challenging resistance rather than retreating from it.
The macro backdrop matters through changing expectations for the relative paths of US and Japanese rates, because USD/JPY remains especially sensitive to shifts in yield differentials and concern about official resistance to rapid yen weakness. Instrument-specific price action still favors the dollar side at the margin: the one month average is 157.56, price is above it, and the structure reads as a recovery attempt, back above the one-month average but still under the longer one. Momentum is roughly 0.7 percent up over the last two weeks, which means the advance has continuity but has not yet delivered the breakout needed to confirm another sustained leg higher.
The immediate barrier is the month swing high at 159.04, about 0.4 percent above the current price, because that level marks the point where the recent recovery has previously met supply. Beyond it, the 160.00 round number handle is likely to attract heavier two-way activity and heightened sensitivity to official rhetoric. On the downside, the one month average at 157.56 is the first meaningful test of whether the recovery is being defended. The nearer 155.00 round number handle then becomes a psychological line, while the shelf of support at 153.23, about 3.2 percent below, is structurally more important because holding it preserves the sequence of recovery lows. The wider three month range is 152.88 to 163.99, which means current price is elevated within the range but still short of its upper extreme.
If USD/JPY posts a decisive move above 159.04, then resistance has been absorbed and the path opens toward 163.99, with acceptance above 160.00 strengthening that bullish path because it would remove both a recent high and a major round-number obstacle. If the pair instead fails around 159.04 and slips below 157.56, then the recovery loses immediate momentum and attention shifts toward 155.00. If that handle cannot hold, pressure should build toward 153.23; losing 153.23 exposes 150.00 because the key support shelf would have failed and the lower boundary at 152.88 would no longer offer convincing structural protection.
The main risk to the constructive read is a sharp repricing of relative rate expectations or stronger official pushback, because either could turn a crowded challenge of resistance into a fast reversal. Sustained trade below 157.56 would weaken the thesis, while a break of 153.23 would invalidate it and place 150.00 in view. Conversely, failure to retreat despite the last session finishing 0.2 percent lower would show resilient demand beneath resistance. Net, USD/JPY retains an upside bias, but confirmation requires 159.04 to give way and 160.00 to hold.
Key levels: support 153.23 (3.2% below), resistance 159.04 (0.4% above), one-month average 157.56, three-month range 152.88 to 163.99.
