USD/JPY – Daily Read

$157.80
USD/JPY is consolidating within an underlying advance rather than reversing it. Last price 157.80 is 0.1 percent lower on the last session, and the pair is holding in the upper half of its one-month range, which means demand has absorbed the recent retreat without surrendering the broader structure. The clear view is cautiously bullish, but conviction requires renewed strength through nearby resistance because the current position still reflects hesitation rather than clean continuation.
The immediate catalyst is the shifting balance between US and Japanese rate expectations, because USD/JPY remains especially sensitive to changes in the relative return on each currency. The one month average is 157.95; price is below it, and the structure reads as a pullback, slipping under the one-month average while the longer trend still points up. The pair is also roughly 0.3 percent down over the last two weeks, which means short-term pressure is present but has not yet done enough damage to overturn the larger advance.
The month swing high at 158.95, about 0.7 percent above the current price, is the first meaningful resistance because it marks where the latest upward attempt ran out of force. A decisive move above 158.95 would show that supply there has been cleared and opens the path toward 163.99. Beyond that, the nearer round number handle at 160.00 matters because sustained trade above it would reinforce acceptance at higher prices. On the downside, a shelf of support at 156.07, about 1.1 percent below, is the main defensive line because it separates an orderly pullback from a deeper deterioration. The nearer round number handle at 155.00 sits below that shelf and could slow a decline, but losing 156.07 exposes 152.88. Those endpoints define the three month range of 152.88 to 163.99, which means breaks at either side would carry more significance than movement inside the recent congestion.
The bull path is straightforward: if USD/JPY reclaims 157.95 and then closes decisively above 158.95, then the pullback has likely completed and pressure can extend through 160.00 toward 163.99 because resistance would have failed in sequence. The bear path requires similar confirmation: if rebounds remain capped beneath 157.95 and the pair then loses 156.07, then the structure shifts from consolidation to a broader retreat, with 155.00 becoming an intermediate support before 152.88 because demand would be forced to regroup at lower levels.
The main risk to the bullish view is a rapid narrowing in relative rate expectations or a sharp change in official currency rhetoric, because either could overwhelm otherwise constructive price behavior around 157.80. A sustained loss of 156.07 would invalidate the pullback interpretation, while a failure to hold 155.00 would strengthen the case for movement toward 152.88. Conversely, acceptance above 158.95 would invalidate the near-term bearish case and refocus attention on 160.00 and 163.99. Net, the pair retains an upward bias, but confirmation rests with resistance rather than assumption.
Key levels: support 156.07 (1.1% below), resistance 158.95 (0.7% above), one-month average 157.95, three-month range 152.88 to 163.99.
