USD/JPY – Daily Read

24 October 2026 | Forex | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
$156.84

USD/JPY is consolidating within a larger upward trend, but the near-term burden remains on the dollar to prove the pullback has ended. Last price is 156.84, with the last session 0.1 percent higher, yet it is trading in the lower half of its one-month range. That matters because price remains below the one month average at 157.89, which means the structure still reads as a pullback, slipping under the one-month average while the longer trend continues to point up. The clear view is cautiously constructive above support, but not outright bullish until the recent ceiling gives way.

The broader macro influence is the path of relative rate expectations and sensitivity to Japanese currency policy, because USD/JPY typically responds directly when the expected return gap between the dollar and yen changes. The instrument-specific signal is that momentum is roughly 0.9 percent down over the last two weeks, which means the latest advance has not yet displaced the corrective pressure. This is therefore a contest between a longer upward structure and a shorter loss of force, with the next directional move likely determined by whether dollar demand can reclaim the upper end of the recent range or whether yen strength forces a deeper retracement.

The month swing high at 159.04 sits about 1.4 percent above the current price and is the main resistance because it marks the point where the latest upward attempt previously failed. A decisive clearance would show that overhead supply has been absorbed and would bring the round number handle at 160.00 into focus as a psychological test. Below, a shelf of support at 156.07 lies about 0.5 percent below, and it matters because it is the nearest area capable of preserving the pullback interpretation rather than allowing a broader reversal. The nearer round number handle at 155.00 provides an additional reference beneath that shelf. The full three month range runs from 152.88 to 163.99, which means current trade remains well inside established boundaries rather than at an exhausted extreme.

The bull path is straightforward: if 156.07 continues to hold and price recovers 157.89, then the pullback begins to look mature and another challenge of 159.04 becomes credible. If a decisive move above 159.04 follows, it opens the path toward 163.99 because the market would have cleared the month swing high and restored alignment with the longer upward trend. The bear path starts if rebounds remain capped below 157.89 and pressure returns to 156.07. If that shelf is lost decisively, then 155.00 becomes vulnerable and losing 156.07 exposes 152.88, because the nearest meaningful defense would have failed.

The main risk to the constructive view is a sustained break below 156.07, which would invalidate the idea that this is merely a contained pullback and shift attention toward 152.88. Conversely, persistent trade above 159.04 would invalidate the cautious stance and strengthen the case for 160.00 followed by 163.99. Net, USD/JPY remains upwardly biased over the longer horizon but tactically fragile at 156.84 because the market must reclaim 157.89 before the bulls can credibly retake control.
