USD/JPY – Daily Read

$157.96
USD/JPY is consolidating within an established advance rather than reversing, with the last price at 157.96 after finishing the last session 0.2 percent lower. That distinction matters because it is holding in the upper half of its one-month range, showing that the modest retreat has not displaced the broader upward structure. The clear view is cautiously bullish while nearby support holds, but the pair is approaching an area where conviction must be demonstrated rather than assumed.
The macro sensitivity remains centered on shifting expectations for the relative direction of US and Japanese rates, because that relationship directly affects the appeal of holding dollars against yen. Within the pair itself, the one month average is 157.81; price is above it, and the structure reads as a clean uptrend, price above both its one-month and longer averages. The roughly 0.1 percent decline over the last two weeks therefore looks more like stalled progress than forceful deterioration, which means the market is compressing beneath resistance while retaining a constructive underlying bias.
The month swing high at 159.04 is the immediate test, sitting about 0.7 percent above the current price. It matters because that high marks the point where previous upward pressure stopped, so a sustained clearance would show that supply there has been absorbed. The nearer round number handle at 160.00 could still slow follow-through because large psychological levels often concentrate positioning and profit-taking. Below, the nearer round number handle at 155.00 is the first important buffer, while a shelf of support at 154.20, about 2.4 percent below, is the more decisive structural line because it separates an orderly pullback from a meaningful loss of trend control. The wider three month range of 152.88 to 163.99 defines the broader battlefield, which means moves beyond the nearer boundaries could travel farther than recent quiet trading suggests.
The bull path is straightforward: if USD/JPY holds above 157.81, presses through 159.04, and then establishes acceptance above 160.00, the advance gains confirmation because resistance would have shifted into support. A decisive move above 159.04 opens the path toward 163.99, with the upper end of the three month range becoming relevant as prior supply is cleared. The bear path begins if strength repeatedly fails beneath 159.04 and price slips through 155.00, because that would indicate weakening demand. Losing 154.20 exposes 152.88, which means the decline would no longer resemble a contained pause inside the prevailing advance.
The main risk to the constructive read is a sharp repricing of the rate relationship or an abrupt change in official tolerance for yen weakness, because USD/JPY can move quickly when policy expectations and positioning turn together. A sustained loss of 154.20 would invalidate the near-term bullish interpretation, while recovery back above that shelf without progress through 159.04 would leave the pair range-bound rather than decisively strong. Net, the balance remains tilted upward above 154.20, but confirmation requires 159.04 to break decisively and 160.00 to hold rather than merely trade briefly.
Key levels: support 154.20 (2.4% below), resistance 159.04 (0.7% above), one-month average 157.81, three-month range 152.88 to 163.99.
