S&P 500 (SPX) – Daily Read
24 September 2026 | Index | Titan Macro Desk
7,706.0
The S&P 500 is attempting to rebuild upward momentum, but it has not yet delivered a clean breakout. Last price is 7,706, 0.0 percent higher on the day. That unchanged session masks a constructive position: the index is holding in the upper half of its one-month range and has recovered an important near-term reference point. The clear view is cautiously bullish while support holds, with confirmation still required above the recent peak. This matters because the market is close enough to resistance for the next decisive move to define whether the recovery broadens or stalls.
The macro backdrop remains a contest between confidence in growth and earnings on one side, and sensitivity to rates, policy expectations, and valuation on the other. For an index, that tension matters because leadership must be sufficiently broad to absorb profit-taking in its largest constituents. Momentum is roughly 0.6 percent up over the last two weeks, which supports the recovery argument but does not suggest an overheated advance. The one month average is 7,674; price is above it, and the structure reads as a recovery attempt, back above the one-month average but still under the longer one. That combination says buyers have regained short-term control, while the broader trend has not fully confirmed.
The nearer round number handle at 7,750 is the first test of whether buyers can press an advantage rather than merely defend the rebound. Acceptance above it would improve the quality of the advance and bring the month swing high at 7,782, about 1.0 percent above the current price, into direct focus. That high matters because it is where recent supply proved strong enough to stop progress. A decisive move above 7,782 opens the path toward 7,817, which is also the upper boundary of the three month range 7,314 to 7,817. Clearing that boundary would signal that the recovery has become a genuine range expansion.
Below, the one month average at 7,674 is the immediate line buyers should defend to preserve the recovery structure. The nearer round number handle at 7,500 sits beside a shelf of support at 7,508, about 2.6 percent below. Their proximity strengthens that area because systematic, tactical, and psychologically driven demand can converge there. Losing 7,508 exposes 7,314, the lower edge of the three month range, and would recast the recent strength as a failed recovery rather than consolidation.
The bull path is straightforward: if the index holds above 7,674, works through 7,750, and then secures a decisive move above 7,782, then buyers should have room to challenge 7,817. The bear path is equally clear: if price slips back below 7,674 and selling accelerates through 7,508 and 7,500, then the market becomes vulnerable to a deeper move toward 7,314.
The main risk is false conviction near the top of the range. A brief push through resistance without sustained acceptance would weaken the breakout case, while a loss of 7,508 would invalidate the constructive read. Net, the index has a bullish near-term bias, but the decisive evidence lies above 7,782.
