Nikkei 225 (NKY) – Daily Read
25 September 2026 | Index | Titan Macro Desk
66,373.6
The Nikkei 225 is attempting to turn a short-term rebound into a broader recovery, with the last price at 66,374, 2.1 percent higher on the day. The move matters because the index is pressing the top of its one-month range, where improving demand now meets a meaningful supply test. The near-term bias is constructive, but this is still a breakout attempt rather than a completed breakout. Buyers have regained control of the immediate structure, yet they must prove they can absorb selling near the range ceiling before the advance can be treated as durable.
The macro backdrop remains important because Japanese equities are highly sensitive to the interaction between domestic policy expectations, the yen, global yields, and overseas risk appetite. A supportive currency translation effect and firm global equity sentiment can reinforce demand for large Japanese exporters, while a stronger yen or renewed pressure in global risk assets would work in the opposite direction. Within the index itself, momentum is roughly 4.5 percent up over the last two weeks. Price is also above the one month average at 64,777, so the structure reads as a recovery attempt, back above the one-month average but still under the longer one. That distinction matters: short-term positioning has improved, but the market has not yet cleared the broader structural hurdle.
The immediate battleground is the month swing high at 66,792, about 0.6 percent above the current price. That level represents the point where the existing range has previously attracted enough supply to stop the advance. The nearby 67,000 handle adds psychological and positioning resistance, so a close through this area would signal that sellers are being absorbed rather than merely tested. The 66,000 handle is the first nearby reference for buyers. Holding it would keep pressure on the range high, while repeated failures beneath it would suggest the current surge is losing traction. Below, the shelf of support at 62,726, about 5.5 percent below, is the more important defensive line because it anchors the rebound structure. The full three month range runs from 60,449 to 70,385, framing both the recovery opportunity and the downside risk.
The bull path is straightforward: if demand holds above 66,000 and produces a decisive move above 66,792, then the range ceiling has given way and the path opens toward 70,385. Progress would be more convincing if 67,000 changes from resistance into support, showing that buyers can defend the breakout after the initial impulse. The bear path begins if rejection near the highs pushes the index back below 66,000 and follow-through selling develops. If that weakness then breaks 62,726, the recovery structure fails and exposes 60,449.
The principal risk to the constructive view is a macro reversal that strengthens the yen, tightens financial conditions, or damages global risk appetite while the index is testing resistance. The read is invalidated by losing 62,726, because that would convert a controlled pullback into structural failure. Net, the Nikkei remains tactically bullish, but conviction belongs above 66,792; until then, it is a strong recovery pressing resistance, not yet a confirmed escape from the range.
