US Dollar Index (DXY) – Daily Read

21 September 2026 | Forex | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
$100.28

The US Dollar Index is trying to turn recovery into a broader breakout. At 100.28, 0.1 percent higher on the day, DXY is pressing the top of its one-month range rather than merely rebounding from weakness. That distinction matters. Buyers have regained near-term control, but they have not yet cleared the boundary that would confirm a more durable advance. The working view is constructive while the index holds above 100.00, with conviction reserved for a decisive break of the range ceiling.

The macro backdrop is a contest between relative rate expectations, demand for defensive liquidity, and confidence in growth outside the United States. The dollar benefits when markets expect tighter US financial conditions, when global risk appetite deteriorates, or when other major currencies face more persistent growth concerns. It struggles when rate expectations soften and capital becomes more comfortable moving into cyclical and higher-yielding exposures. For DXY specifically, momentum roughly 1.2 percent up over the last two weeks shows that demand has been building rather than arriving in a single burst. The one month average is 99.48; price is above it, and the structure reads as a recovery attempt, back above the one-month average but still under the longer one. That leaves the dollar tactically firm, but not yet in an established longer-term advance.

The immediate test is the month swing high at 100.56, about 0.3 percent above the current price. This is where recent supply has proved sufficient to stop advances, so clearing it would show that buyers can absorb selling at the top of the range. A decisive move above 100.56 opens the path toward 101.64, the upper edge of the three month range of 98.56 to 101.64. The 100.00 handle is the nearer line of defence. Holding it preserves the breakout attempt and keeps dips looking corrective. Above the range, 102.00 becomes the next round number handle where profit-taking and fresh selling interest could reasonably gather. On the downside, a shelf of support at 98.60, about 1.7 percent below, is the critical structural floor. It sits close to the lower boundary of the broader range and represents the area where buyers previously prevented deeper deterioration.

The bull path is straightforward: if DXY holds 100.00 and then closes decisively through 100.56, the recovery should attract follow-through toward 101.64. If that boundary is absorbed rather than sharply rejected, attention shifts to 102.00 and the possibility that the range is resolving higher. The bear path begins with repeated failure at 100.56. If that rejection pushes price back through 100.00 and selling persists, the recovery loses credibility and focus returns to 99.48. If that area cannot stabilise the decline, pressure should build toward 98.60. Losing 98.60 exposes 98.00 and would signal that sellers have regained control.

The main risk to the constructive read is a false break above 100.56 followed by rapid acceptance below 100.00. That would indicate exhausted buying rather than genuine expansion. Conversely, sustained trade above 101.64 would invalidate the range-bound interpretation and strengthen the bullish case. Net, DXY has the initiative, but confirmation still sits just overhead: constructive above 100.00, bullish through 100.56, and materially vulnerable below 98.60.
