Five Screens, Shown in Full

The Business, in Plain Words

Digital used car auctions still losing cash

Picture two dealerships swapping a clapped out van through an app instead of a noisy auction hall. ACV Auctions built that online marketplace to link buyers and sellers across the trade, yet the business still runs at an 8 percent negative profit margin and minus 14 percent return on equity despite 12 percent revenue growth.

The shares trade at 7.45 against a fair value of 6.96, which leaves no margin of safety. A 22 times forward earnings multiple on a loss making cyclical name in auto retail offers nothing attractive, even though the ethical screen is clear.

Vehicle demand swings hard with the economy and credit conditions, so any recovery in volumes could vanish quickly. The gap between price and value plus ongoing losses leaves no reason to step in.
