Copper – Daily Read

20 September 2026 | Commodity | Titan Macro Desk

Last Price
$6.72

Copper is pressing higher, but this is a controlled advance rather than an unchecked breakout. Last price $6.72, 1.2 percent higher on the day. It is holding in the upper half of its one-month range, confirming that buyers retain control after dips. The clear view is constructive: the broader trend remains upward, while softer recent momentum argues for patience near resistance. That distinction matters because the next move must be earned through fresh buying, not assumed from the existing trend.

The macro backdrop is supportive but complicated. Copper continues to benefit from constrained mine supply, infrastructure and power-grid investment, and demand tied to electrification and data-centre construction. Tariff uncertainty and regional stockpiling are also distorting trade flows, making price action a less reliable signal of global growth alone. Against that support, high prices are encouraging downstream consumers to delay purchases, while persistent weakness in China’s property complex remains a demand restraint. Copper is therefore trading at the intersection of structural scarcity and near-term price sensitivity, leaving it vulnerable to abrupt reactions to supply headlines, trade policy, the dollar, and Chinese buying behavior.

The one month average $6.64; price is above it, and the structure reads as a clean uptrend, price above both its one-month and longer averages. That area is the first measure of whether buyers remain willing to defend normal pullbacks. Momentum roughly 0.9 percent down over the last two weeks. This loss of pace does not reverse the trend, but it shows that price has advanced faster than conviction recently. The nearer round number handles at $6.80 and $6.60 frame the immediate contest. Holding above $6.60 preserves the constructive posture, while acceptance above $6.80 would indicate that buyers are successfully absorbing supply near the top of the range.

The month swing high $6.89, about 2.7 percent above the current price. This is the critical ceiling because it marks where the latest advance previously met enough selling to stop. The three month range $6.02 to $6.89 reinforces its significance as the upper boundary of a broader consolidation. A decisive move above $6.89 opens the path toward $7.00, where the market would face an obvious test of follow-through and profit-taking. A shelf of support at $6.40, about 4.7 percent below. That shelf should attract trend buyers because it sits beneath the nearer handles and represents a deeper defense of the advance. Losing $6.40 exposes $6.02, implying that the market has shifted from a routine pullback into a broader range reset.

The bull path is straightforward: if copper holds $6.60, clears $6.80, and then establishes acceptance above $6.89, buyers can press toward $7.00 as resistance converts into support. The bear path begins if repeated failures below $6.89 weaken demand, followed by a loss of $6.60. If selling then overwhelms $6.40, the move toward $6.02 becomes the more credible outcome.

The main risks are easing supply concerns, softer industrial demand, reduced tariff urgency, or a macro turn that pressures commodities broadly. The constructive read is invalidated by sustained trade below $6.40. Net, copper remains bullish in structure but needs a clean break of $6.89 to convert resilience into renewed acceleration.
