FTSE 100 (UKX) – Daily Read
16 September 2026 | Index | Titan Macro Desk
10,697.6
The FTSE 100 is attempting a rebound, but the burden of proof remains with buyers. Last price 10,698, 0.4 percent higher on the day. That gain improves the immediate tone without repairing the broader structure. The index is trading in the lower half of its one-month range, momentum is roughly 1.2 percent down over the last two weeks, and rallies still look vulnerable to selling. The clear view is cautiously bearish beneath resistance, with scope for tactical upside only if buyers convert today’s firmness into sustained follow-through.
The macro backdrop is pulling the index in competing directions. Its defensive, internationally exposed constituents can attract demand when investors want established cash flows and diversified overseas earnings. At the same time, uncertainty around global growth, currencies, commodity demand, and the interest-rate outlook can weigh on cyclicals and limit valuation expansion. This tension helps explain why a positive session has not yet changed the prevailing direction. The one month average is 10,756; price is below it, and the structure reads as a downtrend, price under both its one-month and longer averages. Until that positioning changes, strength should be treated as a test of supply rather than confirmation of a durable turn.
The first nearby test is the round number handle at 10,750. It matters because it sits close to the one month average at 10,756, creating a compact area where sellers can defend the existing downtrend. Acceptance above that zone would suggest the rebound has substance and would shift attention toward the month swing high at 10,920, about 2.1 percent above the current price. That high is the principal barrier because it marks where the latest advance previously failed. A decisive move above 10,920 opens the path toward 10,990, the upper edge of the three month range 10,303 to 10,990.
Below the market, a shelf of support at 10,586, about 1.0 percent below, is the key defensive line. Buyers need to protect it to preserve the possibility that recent weakness is becoming contained. The nearer round number handle at 10,500 would then act as a psychological waypoint, but it should not be mistaken for the main structural floor. Losing 10,586 exposes 10,303, implying a much deeper retracement through the range and confirming that sellers remain in control.
The bull path is straightforward: if the index reclaims 10,750, holds above 10,756, and then breaks 10,920 decisively, buying pressure should broaden and 10,990 becomes the logical destination. The bear path is equally clear: if the rebound stalls beneath 10,750 and price rolls through 10,586, then failed upside progress would reinforce the downtrend and increase the probability of a move toward 10,303.
The main risk to the bearish lean is a rapid improvement in global risk appetite that carries the index through resistance and keeps it there. Conversely, repeated failure near the averages would invalidate the rebound case. Net, the FTSE 100 is stabilising, but not yet turning: buyers have an opportunity, while sellers retain structural control until 10,920 is decisively cleared.
