The Business, in Plain Words

Mattress springs maker caught in a downturn trap

Every time a new sofa or bed lands in a living room, Leggett & Platt supplies the steel wire and foam inside. Right now demand is sliding, with revenue down 10 percent, and the shares sit at a forward multiple of just 10.9 times. That low number looks tempting until you remember this is a cyclical business whose earnings peak at the top of the housing cycle.

We pass because the modest discount to our fair value offers no real margin of safety and the revenue trend points to lower earnings ahead. High ROE of 25 percent cannot mask the fact that a low multiple on falling sales is usually a warning rather than a bargain.

Currency moves, raw-material spikes and housing slowdowns all sit in the risk column, even though the ethical screen is clean. The market is pricing in continued pressure and the numbers give little reason to disagree.

The risks · The things to watch: it's a small-cap, so the share price can swing harder than the market; it carries a real debt load, which raises the stakes if revenue slips.
