The values screen, explained · five checks, plain English
This company is excluded by both standards. There are two widely recognised ways to check whether a company is suitable for a Muslim investor. It fails on both:
Used by most halal investing apps ✗ DOES NOT PASS
The one Titan applies ✗ DOES NOT PASS
Why it fails. The problem is its prohibited keyword in sector/industry: gambling. Because both standards agree on this, it is a clear exclusion, not a borderline case.
What these two standards are, and how they differ →
- Business activity Prohibited keyword in sector/industry: gambling Fail
- Debt load Interest-bearing debt is of its assets, above the one-third ceiling the screen allows. Fail
- Interest-bearing cash Interest-bearing cash and securities are of assets, above the one-third limit. Fail
- Receivables Money owed to the company is of assets, above the 49% limit. Fail
- Revenue purity of revenue comes from non-compliant sources, over the 5% line. Fail
Every security is read against two recognised standards: our stricter asset-based screen (ratios measured against total assets) and the more widely used market-value standard (measured against market capitalisation). Where they agree we say so plainly; where they part ways — almost always on the debt check — we show both readings and mark it, because that disagreement is the finding, not a fault. We report the score; you and your scholar make the call.
The business, in plain words · what the numbers mean
Betting App Growth Fails Our Ethical Line
Every Friday night when fans in Illinois or Ontario open an app to place a sports bet or spin a virtual wheel, Rush Street takes a slice. The business is expanding fast, with revenue up 41 percent and a solid 35 percent return on equity. Yet the numbers also show a thin 3 percent profit margin and a forward price to earnings ratio of 39.6 times, well above our fair value of 24.02 dollars while the shares sit at 32.50.
We pass outright because the ethical screen rejects any exposure to gambling. That single filter overrides the growth story and the strong buy rating from eleven analysts. Their 30 dollar median target still leaves the shares expensive on our measures, and the unknown competitive moat adds further caution.
The low margins leave little room for error if regulation tightens or player spending slows in a consumer downturn. High returns on equity can prove fleeting in this sector when cycles turn. Analysis, not advice.
| Forward P/E | 31.8x fairly priced for its growth rate |
| Trailing P/E | 78.7x expensive — the price assumes strong growth ahead |
| Revenue growth | 41.1% growing very fast |
| Profit margin | 3.0% barely profitable |
| Return on equity | 34.6% an exceptional return on shareholder capital |
| Debt to equity | 1.74 a meaningful debt load worth watching |
| Current ratio | 1.96 healthy short-term liquidity |
| Beta | 1.56 much more volatile than the market |
| Market cap | $6.2B |
| Employees | 912 |
The risks · The things to watch: it already moves more than the market on an average day; it carries a real debt load, which raises the stakes if revenue slips.
