Company Overview

Eighteen months ago, the consensus view was that AI search would destroy Google. ChatGPT was the Google killer. Search ad revenue would collapse. The moat was breached. That was the narrative. Here is what actually happened: Google integrated Gemini across Search, Workspace, Cloud, and Android. Cloud revenue accelerated. Search revenue grew. Ad pricing held. The “Google is dead” trade was one of the worst consensus calls of the decade.

Alphabet generates over $320 billion in annual revenue. Google Search and YouTube account for roughly 80% of that. Google Cloud now runs at an annualised rate above $40 billion with improving margins. Waymo is the clear leader in autonomous vehicles with commercial operations expanding. DeepMind continues to produce research that translates directly into products.

The company’s breadth is its edge. Unlike pure-play AI companies, Alphabet has distribution. Over 2 billion Chrome users, 2 billion Android devices, 2.5 billion Gmail accounts. When Google ships an AI feature, it reaches scale on day one. That distribution advantage does not appear in any valuation model, but it shows up in the framework’s regime reading.

Framework Read: Markup Regime

Markup is the trending phase. Accumulation has completed, and price is now moving directionally with institutional participation. Volume confirms the move. Momentum indicators align. The framework reads strong upward price progression supported by positioning data.

What Markup Tells Us

Markup is the regime where trend-following strategies perform best and counter-trend strategies get punished. The institutional bid is visible, not hidden. Pullbacks are shallow and quickly absorbed. New highs attract follow-through rather than selling.

For GOOGL, the markup regime has been active for approximately 5 weeks. The catalyst appears to be the combination of strong Q1 Cloud growth, expanding Gemini adoption metrics, and a revaluation of Google’s AI competitive position. The market is pricing Alphabet as an AI winner, not an AI victim. The framework agrees with that assessment based on flow data.

The risk in markup is complacency. Trends persist until they do not. The framework will flag any shift toward distribution, which would indicate institutional selling into the strength. Until that signal appears, the path of least resistance is higher.

Ethical Screening

Alphabet scores 85.2 on our ethical screening framework. This is a solid score that reflects genuine improvements in corporate governance alongside persistent concerns about data practices:

Valuation Context

At $368.53, Alphabet trades at approximately 23x forward earnings. This is arguably the cheapest mega-cap technology stock relative to growth quality. For context: Apple trades at 30x, Microsoft at 33x, and Amazon at 38x. Alphabet’s discount persists because of regulatory risk and the lingering (though diminishing) narrative around AI disruption to Search.

The Valuation Gap

Forward P/E: ~23x | EV/EBITDA: ~17x | FCF Yield: ~4.5% | Revenue Growth: ~14% YoY

If you strip out the regulatory discount, Alphabet is trading at a meaningful valuation gap to peers with comparable or inferior growth profiles. The markup regime suggests the market is beginning to close that gap, but the re-rating has further to run if Cloud margins continue improving and the antitrust resolution proves less damaging than feared.

The biggest risk to the valuation thesis is the DOJ antitrust case. A forced divestiture of Chrome or Android would materially alter the business structure. However, the most probable outcomes (behavioural remedies, revenue-sharing changes) would impact near-term margins without destroying the core franchise. The market appears to be pricing in a manageable outcome.
